Ten Best Patient Lifts Of 2024

Ten Best Patient Lifts Of 2024
HPFY Staff Writer

Patient lifts or patient transfer lifts are mobility devices that are built to move an individual from one place to another with comfort and ease. Designed for individuals with mobility issues, patient lifts are mobility aids that are either manually or electrically powered to lift a person from one place and carefully place them in another place or in another position. A number of conditions can render a person unable to even have the upper body strength to use mobility aids such as walkers or rollators, and that is where patient lifts come into the picture as they can easily help move a patient without the help of their own body strength. The best of patient lifts are those that offer comfort and safety within one patient transfer lift.

What are the Different Types of Patient Lifts?

There are six major types of interdisciplinary types of patient lifts that are categorized on the basis of power source, function, and mechanism. They are:

Manual Patient Lifts – As the name suggests, these patient lifts are manually powered by a caregiver who places the patient within the lift and then manually moves the lift for the patient thus safely transferring them from one place to another. They are often operated using a handle or crank that helps lift the patient. The hydraulics in the lift then allows the patient to be lowered with safety and ease.

Power Patient Lifts – Power patient lifts are powered using an electric power source such as an AC/DC source or a battery pack. They are powerful and smooth in functioning and can be independently used by the patient as well and can be easier for a caregiver as well. They are more expensive than manual patient lifts but are great for a longer span of use.

Hydraulic Patient Lifts – Hydraulic patient lifts are operated using a hydraulic mechanism that helps easy lifting and placing. They can be either powered or manual in operation. They are one of the most common patient lifts available and are feasible as well.

Sit-To-Stand Patient Lifts – Patients with mobility issues also sometimes find it difficult to stand up without help. Sit-to-stand patient lifts are designed to help an individual stand up from a sitting position with ease. They are also therefore sometimes referred to as stand-up lifts.

Heavy Duty Patient Lifts – Designed for bariatric patients, heavy-duty patient lifts are built to lift weights of up to 500 pounds. They make transfers of bariatric patients more comfortable and easier. They have a stronger frame, a stable base, and reinforced material.

Pool Patient Lifts – Pool patient lifts are designed for moving people in and out of a swimming pool. Their structure and their built is water-resistant, more stable near pools, and easy to operate.

How to Choose the Best Patient Lift?

There are a few important factors you should look into before choosing the best patient lift. They are:

Electric or Manual Patient Lift – There are two major differences between the two, manual and electric patient lifts, which are ease of operation and their cost. Electric patient lifts are more expensive than manual patient lifts but are easier and more comfortable to operate.

Size and Weight Capacity – Since the patient lifts have to carry the patient, the size and weight capacity of the individual using the patient lifts have to be taken into consideration. Inappropriate size and inappropriate weight capacity can cause accidents or mishaps while using the lift.

Adjustability – Some lifts offer great adjustability while using the lift or while the lift is being prepared for use. The adjustability often includes adjusting the patient slings, the hand rests, the footrests, the headrests, and much more.

Patient Lift Slings - Patient lift slings are an important part of the patient lift system and hence choosing the best patient lift along with the best patient slings is important for a complete and comfortable experience.

  • The base width adjustment is easily done by a step/release bar at the rear of the lift
  • The SGA-440 Sit to Stand lift is a lifting aid used by health care professionals to transfer clients. The Sit to Stand lift makes it possible to move mobility impaired individuals with minimal strain or risk to the caregiver while providing complete safety, dignity, and comfort for the client
  • The SGA-440 Sit to Stand lift is one of two components that make up this technology. The other component, the sling, is a specially designed fabric accessory that attaches to the floor lift by means of a carrying bar and straps and holds an individual while the lift or transfer takes place. The sling is generally supplied with the Sit to Stand lift at the initial time of purchase
  • The SGA-440 Sit to Stand lift has the ability to lift an individual up from one location such as chair then move the individual to another location and finally lower the individual into a wheelchair. The functions of lifting up or down are accomplished by pressing buttons on the hand control. The hand control is attached to the Sit to Stand lift. Due to the design of the Sit to Stand lift system, it takes very little effort to press a button to perform the desired motion

Cautions of Prism SGA-440 Sit to Stand Lift

  • Under no circumstance should the SGA-440 Sit to Stand lift and sling (s) be put in control of a person who has not been properly trained in the use and care of this equipment. Failure to adhere to this warning may result in serious injury to the operator, and/or the individual being lifted/ transferred
  • The SGA-440 Sit to Stand lift and sling (s) are not toys. Do not use it for unsafe practices. Do not allow children to play with the floor lift or any of its components
  • The manufacturer warranty is voided if persons unauthorized by Prism Medical Ltd. will perform work on the SGA-440 Sit to Stand lift
  • There are no user-serviceable parts inside the actuator. Do not remove cover screws, or open the unit, as this will VOID THE WARRANTY
  • Never expose the SGA-440 Sit to Stand lift directly to water. Warranty does not cover any misuse or abuse of the floor lift system
  • To maintain optimum function, the SGA-440 Sit to Stand lift should be inspected and maintained on a regular basis
  • Any accessories used with the SGA-440 Sit to Stand lift including sling (s), should be checked to ensure that they are in good working order. Check for signs of wear or fraying prior to use. Report any unusual wear, or damage immediately to your local authorized Prism Medical Service Provider
  • The SGA-440 Sit to Stand lift and associated sling (s) is intended only for lifting and transferring of a person. Prism Medical will not be responsible for any damage caused by the misuse, neglect or purposeful destruction of the lift, and/or its associated components
  • In any circumstances do not exceed the maximum allowable load of this lift
  • There is a risk of explosion if the lift is used in the presence of flammable anesthetics
  • Ensure that a clear space is maintained around the lift. Move any obstacles out of the way before operating the floor lift

How to Care for the Prism SGA-440 Sit to Stand Lift?

  • Do charge the battery whenever possible. This will extend the battery life. A large number of cycles can be obtained from operating on the batteries, but battery lifetime is reduced with frequent discharging
  • Do inspect all cables particularly the mains power cable on the charger for any damage; replace where necessary
  • Do stow the handset and if fitted with charger, the mains power cable when transporting the hoist
  • Do clean the actuators, control box, charger, battery and handset at regular intervals to remove dust and dirt
  • The exterior of the lift should only be cleaned, disinfected and sterilized using isopropyl alcohol
  • Damp a cloth with isopropyl alcohol and wipe down the entire exterior of lift
  • No other chemicals and/or liquids should be used to clean, disinfect and sterilize this lift
  • Do not allow the batteries to fully discharge before connecting to the charger. The batteries are a lead-acid gel cell type that can be trickled charged continuously (batteries used for standby) and have a high current discharge capacity. Life is greatly reduced by deep or complete discharging of the batteries. A longer lifetime is obtained by maintaining fully charged batteries
  • Do not continue to operate the handset by repeatedly pressing the buttons if the lift function will not move or the actuator will not function. If this occurs then the actuator has either reached its end position, the load is too great or there is a malfunction
  • Do not exert excessive force on the handset cable as this may break off the wires inside the cable and prevent some or all of the operations
  • Do not continually operate the hoist functions. The system is not designed for continuous operation. Continuous Operation will cause batteries to be deeply discharged or to damage the actuator or control box by overheating
