5 Tips for At-Home Tracheostomy Care
A tracheostomy tube supports breathing for those who cannot breathe normally due to an injury to the head or the neck or some issue with the windpipe. The placement of a tracheostomy tube can be short-term or long-term. HPFY understands these concerns, which is why we have listed some tips to help you settle in easily at home.
WHAT IS AN EMERGENCY TRACHEOSTOMY DECANNULATION?
A decannulation is when the tracheostomy tube is removed from the neck This is a procedure planned by a physician
A speaking valve is a one way valve that fits over the tracheostomy tube. The valve only allows air to be breathed in via the tracheostomy. When one exhales, the valve closes and air is pushed up via the larynx (the voice box) to exit via the nose and mouth. This facilitates improvements in voice, cough, smell and taste, and secretion management.
Cleaning the Tracheostomy Tube
As you know that the tube has two major parts the outer cannula and the inner cannula. The outer cannula is fixed and cannot be removed but the inner cannula can be removed for cleaning purposes. The tracheostomy inner cannula tube should be cleaned two to three times per day or more as needed.
