Winter Wellness: Your Survival Guide

Winter Wellness: Your Survival Guide
Kevin Cleary

The winter presents a different set of challenges when it comes to our well-being. The dark, long nights paired with the colder temperatures can leave us in a funk both physically and mentally. Yes, the shortest day (or longest night) is the winter solstice on December 21, but winter is just beginning and we have a long way to go until the days become brighter, longer, and warmer. We here at HPFY can give you some options for surviving this difficult time.

Winter Maladies

Believe it or not, our well-being (both physical and mental) faces a different set of challenges in the winter than during warmer weather. Since we are locked in our homes due to colder, darker weather (not to mention Covid-19), there is a plethora of different issues that can pop up to make us a little more miserable during the winter. Some of these winter problems can include:

  • Asthma: Cold air can negatively impact those with asthma can create breathing or respiratory discomfort.
  • Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD): During colder, darker months of winter, the lack of sunlight can create a disorder known as SAD. The use of light therapy can remedy this problem.
  • Mobility Dangers: Snow and ice can make for a treacherous combination for those that have diminished or unsteady mobility.
  • Back Pain: In the winter we can become sedentary and this can lead to strains or other injuries to our lower back. Especially during our times outside shoveling snow.
  • Covid-19: Now is not the time to let our guard down and with more people in close proximity indoors, we can’t get through the winter fast enough to get back outdoors.
  • Overall Health: Dark, cold months mean that we aren’t as active as we would be during warmer months and this can negatively affect our overall well-being.
