How To Use A Cunningham Clamp

The Bard Cunningham Clamp is one of our best-reviewed over-the-counter devices used to manage stress incontinence in men. It is a widely popular and effective incontinence clamp.

About 3-10% of men in the US experience incontinence symptoms. Research has found that high-stress levels that can be attributed to this condition.

Although both genders are at risk of urinary incontinence, women more than men, their symptoms may differ. In fact, women experience stress incontinence more than men. Stress incontinence happens when the muscles and other tissues that support the urethra and control the release of urine become weak.

Penile clamps or incontinence clamps help control the dribbling of urine that may occur when coughing or lifting things. The clamp is worn around the penis to block the urine flow and applies gentle pressure to the top of the penis and urethra—this slight pressure controls bladder leakage.

Bard Cunningham Clamp

One of the most effective penile clamps available is the Bard Cunningham Clamp. This penile clamp is designed to help reduce male incontinence symptoms by compressing the urethra and preventing leakage from the bladder without disturbing natural blood flow. It works as an effective device to minimize the use of incontinence pads and diapers.

How to Use Cunningham Clamp

  1. Start by washing your hands thoroughly and dry them with a clean cloth or paper towel.
  2. Place the penis between the two foam pads on the incontinence clamp. Make sure the clamp is halfway down the shaft of the penis.
  3. Tighten the clamp to compress the urethra.

The cunningham clamp sizes include large, regular-sized, and juvenile clamps, each having five settings to adjust the pressure on the urethra.

To adjust the pressure -

  • Place the penis between the ratchet catch.
  • Press inward on both spring wire loops to release the catch.
  • Shape the upper foam pad with your fingers for better comfort and fit.
  • Release the clamp and push the spring wire loops to urinate.
  • After urinating, put the clamp back on to avoid dribbling.
  • It is important to note that the juvenile clamp is not adjustable.

Important Things to Know

  • Alternate where the clamp is placed - Place it on a slightly different part of the shaft and release it every 1 to 2 hours to let urine flow. Doing so reduces the risk of developing a UTI.
  • Refrain from using the clamp if you have arthritic or tremoring hands.
  • Avoid sleeping with the clamp on.
  • The clamp shouldn't feel too tight. A tight clamp can affect blood flow to the penis and cause skin infection.
  • Replace the clamp every three months or sooner if it breaks or if the foam shows signs of wearing down.

Cleaning The Bard Cunningham Clamp

Make sure to clean the clamp after every use.

To do so -

  1. Wash it with warm water and mild soap. Avoid using detergent or bleach and hot water on the clamp.
  2. Rinse the clamp with cool and clean water.
  3. Squeeze the foam to remove excess water.
  4. Let the clamp air dry (avoid using a blow dryer). Do not place it near heat or in direct sunlight.
  5. Do not put the clamp in the washer or dryer.

Impact of Stress Incontinence

This type of incontinence can significantly impact the quality of life. Constantly feeling self-conscious can inhibit an active lifestyle. Lack of physical activity can, in turn, lead to other physical ailments.

Embarrassment and the stigma attached to incontinence can also force a man to overlook their symptoms.

When should you call a doctor?

Consult your doctor if you have any questions regarding incontinence clamps and especially if you experience any of the following:

  • Have trouble removing the clamp.
  • Notice discoloration, swelling, or discharge.
  • Numbness.
  • Pain or irritation on or around the penis.
  • Experience anything else that may seem unusual.

Many men develop stress incontinence after prostatectomy. This surgery involves removing the prostate gland to treat prostate cancer and can weaken the sphincter. It is one of the most common causes of stress incontinence in men. Stress incontinence can take a toll on your physical and mental well-being. However, using correct and adequate incontinence devices such as penis clamps and incontinence underwear and making lifestyle changes can help you lead a healthier and happier life.
