A Good Night's Sleep with Innerspring Mattresses

With an increase in the toxic levels of stress and tension, sleeping has become just another chore. But one should not take sleep-associated problems lightly. Inadequate or uncomfortable sleep can result in physical and psychological problems and ailments. That is why mattresses were developed to provide us a good night’s rest. Innerspring mattresses are the predecessors of all the foam and gel mattresses we see today.

What are innerspring mattresses?

Supported by a layer of core springs, innerspring mattresses are covered on both sides with different kinds of upholstery. Foam, gel or basic cotton covers are generally used. The spring in the mattress allows the person to turn over comfortably and helps the mattress retain its shape.

Importance of coils in the mattress

The coils or the springs are the most important part of the innerspring mattress. They support the whole structure and they are what make the mattress comfortable and bouncy. They are mostly interconnected with wires but some are encased in covers to protect them.

Types of innerspring mattresses

  • Bonnell spring mattresses: One of the oldest spring types, Bonnell spring mattresses are shaped like an hour glass. The ends of these springs are knotted and wrapped around the top and bottom circular portion of the coil.

  • Pocketed or Marshall spring mattresses: Basically, the springs are encased in shells or pockets. They are attached to each other by a cross section. The springs are free to move in this set-up as only the pockets or the encasements are attached to each other.

  • Continuous spring mattresses: Within these kinds of mattresses, rows of coils are formed from a single piece of wire. They work similar to offset coils.

The bed base is an important part of innerspring mattresses as it provides support to the spring layers in the middle. The entire balancing weight falls on to the bed base and hence it is important for the base to be strong.

Types of foundations of innerspring mattresses

  • Traditional box spring foundation: This base haslarge heavy-duty springs that support the entire frame.

  • All wood foundation: One of the commonest foundations, it provides concrete support to the structure, is highly durable but a little more expensive than the others.

  • Grid top foundation: Made of a mixture of durable steel and wood, it is one of the cheapest and most feasible foundations.

Benefits of innerspring mattresses

There are a number of benefits of switching to an innerspring mattress:

  • One of the oldest running mattress types, there are multiple options available for one to choose.

  • It can be accommodated on all budget types and hence is apt for all kinds of homes.

  • Since no foam or gel is involved there is very little or no smell emitted by the mattress.

  • Since there is a lot of space in between the mattress, it allows a lot of air flow thus giving a cooling effect.
