SleepSafe Beds: An Ideal Choice for Adults and Children with Special Needs

SleepSafe Beds: An Ideal Choice for Adults and Children with Special Needs
Swati Chadha

SleepSafe beds are durable medical equipment product with grown-ups and children with special needs, as their target group. They prevent falls and entrapments for individuals with cognitive and physical disabilities. SleepSafe Beds are listed and registered with the Food and Drugs Administration (FDA), as they meet all their guidelines on entrapment and fall. Their patented design is not only aesthetically appealing, but addresses all safety issues in ways no other traditional institutional equipment can match:

  • The 3/16 inches windows in the safety rails provide see through visibility facilitating supervision by the attendant/caregiver.
  • Entrapment issues are addressed as the space between the side rails, head and footboards is nearly non-existent (even with mattress compression).

The structure of every Sleep Safe bed includes a foundation which supports the mattress. The frame can be fixed, articulated or HI-LO. The primary models are - SleepSafe Classic Low Bed, SleepSafe II Medium Bed and SleepSafer Tall Bed.

Key Features of Sleepsafe Beds

Let us look at the key features of SleepSafe beds which will help the customer choose the best to match his/her needs:

Height of the Safety Rail Protection

This refers to the distance from the top of the mattress to the top of the safety rail. The choice should be made based on the activity level of the user. The SleepSafer Extension Kit offers an additional 16.75 inches of safety rail height when ordered or retrofitted with the existing SleepSafer bed.

Transfer Height

This is the distance from the floor to the top edge of the bed’s wooden side panel below the safety rail.

Foundation Types

Foundation type and its features or functions: The following foundation choices are available for SleepSafe beds –

  1. Fixed foundation – offers a fixed height with no articulation or HI-LO features. The mattress will lie flat on the box spring or bunkie board. Depending on the bed model chosen, the user has the choice of deciding the fixed height at the time of installation. The low bed and tall bed offer two (2) different fixed height options, whereas, the medium bed offers two or three different fixed height options. The bed height chosen decides the height of the safety rail. The shorter the height of the fixed foundation, the taller would be the safety rail.
  2. Manual foundation – offers four (4) choices.
    1. Manual HI-LO foundation without the articulating feature – increase or decreases the mattress height with one crank in the front panel below the safety rail.
    2. Manual Articulating foundation without the HI-LO feature – raises or lowers the head and/or knee section of the bed using two (2) cranks.
    3. Electric articulating foundation with manual HI-LO - raises or lowers the head and/or knee section of the bed electrically using a remote. Raising or lowering of the mattress is again controlled by a manual crank.
    4. Manual HI-LO foundation with articulating feature – raises and lowers the mattress height and head and/or knee section of the bed using three (3) manual cranks.
The following table summarizes the above-mentioned four (4) choices: The hand cranks are run by a hydraulic system which makes it minimal effort on the part of the caregiver to operate them.

    Type HI-LO Foundation (Manual/Electric) Articulating Foundation (Manual/Electric)
    Type 1 Manual No
    Type 2 No Manual
    Type 3 Manual Electric
    Type 4 Manual Manual

  3. Articulated foundation – electric frame with a fixed height. The head and knee elevation are enabled by a push of a button on a remote. The height can be decided by the customer at the time of installation, which will also have a direct bearing on the safety rail height.
  4. HI-LO foundation – electric frame with full articulation. Head and knee elevation as well as adjustability of mattress height, are facilitated by a remote control wired on a cord plugged into the bed. Thus, this is a fully electric bed. Again, the mattress height will decide the height of the safety rail above the mattress.

Bed Size

  • Twin, mattress size - 38" by 77"
  • Full, mattress size - 51" by 77"
  • Queen, mattress size - 61" by 77"

Each of these beds is available with each of the foundation types. The mattresses can support up to 350 lbs.

Wood Finish Choices and Colors

SleepSafe beds use natural wood with a clear finish. Some of the choices include alder, maple, oak, mahogany, cherry, mixed or solid colors.

Additional Accessories

Padding, pole option, headboard window, footboard window, mesh screened windows, medical tubing, extended enclosure (open/closed), dual view safety rails for high bed, extension kit to increase the height of the safety rail, enclosed top with padding for additional safety.

All bed models have locking casters. They use a memory foam mattress which provides unique comfort zones for support and pressure relief. The gel polymers in the foam keep the mattress cool so as to maintain the user’s body temperature. The mattress is covered in a pressure reducing, fluid-resistant, fire-retardant, anti-bacterial, nylon fabric cover.

The main difference amongst the three (3) models is the height of their safety rail protection above the mattress. Each model increases its overall height by about 10 to 12 inches. So, even when the safety rail does not change in size, its overall height changes with each model. They also differ in their transfer height. While, the user has to pick the bed model and foundation type, based on his/her requirement, the following specifications of each of the models will facilitate his/her decision-making.
