Types of Oxygen Regulators: Understanding and Ensuring Safe Usage

Types of Oxygen Regulators: Understanding and Ensuring Safe Usage
Taikhum Sadiq

Regulating the flow or dosage of any medication is as important as the treatment itself, as a slight change in the dosage or the flow can create complications for the patient. The same goes for oxygen. Not enough oxygen means difficulty breathing, and excessive oxygen can lead to oxygen poisoning, causing complications in the respiratory system. To control the flow of oxygen one consumes from the concentrator, regulators come into play.

What is the Purpose of a Pressure Regulator on an Oxygen Tank?

Oxygen regulators are devices that can adjust the liter flow of oxygen from 1-25 liters per minute, depending on the amount prescribed and the device you are using. Regulators for children are specialized to regulate between 1-32 liters, and they come in small doses. In common language, an oxygen regulator regulates the flow of oxygen from the tank to deliver the right amount of oxygen to the patient.

Types of Oxygen Regulators

There are two oxygen regulator types:

1. Conserving Regulator

An oxygen-conserving regulator helps your oxygen tank last about 5 times longer than a continuous oxygen regulator at the same flow rate. A pulse dose of oxygen is given to the patient only when the patient breathes. The oxygen-conserving regulators only give out oxygen when the patient initiates them. The problem with these types of oxygen regulators is that if the patient breathes through the mouth or does not take a deep breath, the device won’t work, and the dose of oxygen won’t be delivered. Most oxygen-conserving regulators are highly sensitive, but there are situations where the patient requires a continuous flow regulator.

Precision Medical EasyPulse Five Oxygen Conserving Regulator

Precision Medical EasyPulse Five is designed to conserve oxygen by delivering it in pulses during inhalation rather than a continuous flow, making oxygen cylinders last longer and more portable for patients. It is an easy-to-use oxygen-conserving regulator that has a single dial control with a T-Handle/Hand Tight Nut that makes it easy to attach to an oxygen tank. It offers up to a 5.7 to 1 savings ratio versus a continuous flow regulator.

Precision Medical EasyPulse5+6 Oxygen Conserving Regulator

Precision Medical EasyPulse5+6 Oxygen Conserving Regulator is the lightest and smallest oxygen tank regulator with 6 continuous flow settings and pulse flow settings of 1-5. This is helpful for patients who need to choose the flow setting that is right for them. The device delivers a tank-conserving ratio of up to 5.7 to 1, allowing oxygen users to get more time out of their tanks.

2. Continuous Regulator

These regulators are fixed on the top of the oxygen tank, and their dial allows the patient to adjust the oxygen flow. These regulators allow a continuous flow of oxygen, thus emptying the oxygen tank faster depending on the amount of intake and the frequency of usage.

Drive 870 Oxygen Regulator

Drive Oxygen Regulator CGA 870 is designed to fit CGA 870 valves. It offers 11 airflow settings on an easy-to-operate single selector knob. This oxygen tank regulator is lightweight and durable and comes with a 3-year warranty. It has Inlet Pressure: 300 - 3,000 PSI and Outlet pressure: 50 PSI

Precision Medical EasyDial Reg Oxygen Regulator

Precision Medical EasyDial Reg Oxygen Regulator has a large flow adjustment knob to make it easier for users to adjust the flow settings. It is also designed for safety with a built-in pressure relief valve and a protected contents gauge. This continuous oxygen tank regulator comes in two designs – nut style and yoke style. The low-force Viton yoke seal provides a superior tank-to-regulator seal.

How to Put a Regulator on an Oxygen Tank Safely?

Though an oxygen regulator looks fairly complex, it is very easy to use following some basic steps.

  1. Make sure that the regulator you choose has the correct flow rate prescribed.
  2. Make sure that the flow selector on the top of the concentrator or cylinder is set to zero.
  3. Firmly place the regulator above the cylinder or, in the case of a concentrator in the Shrader, wait until you hear a clicking sound that ensures it is locked in place.
  4. Set the flow rate regulator according to the one prescribed to the patient
  5. Switch on the concentrator or slowly open the valve of the cylinder to let the oxygen flow.

Choosing the right type of oxygen-conserving device can go a long way in ensuring a patient's perfect administration of oxygen therapy. A small dosage or flow mistake can result in severe complications; therefore, choosing the right oxygen regulator is critical.
