How To Measure Bra Size At Home

How To Measure Bra Size At Home
Akanksha Nigam

No matter how long you have been wearing a bra, it is actually quite common that you may be wearing the wrong bra size.

The most common mistake while shopping for a mastectomy bra is choosing a band that is too big and a cup size that is too small. Many factors can alter the style and fit of a bra, such as weight gain or loss, pregnancy, and time of the month. A well-fitting bra may go unnoticed, but an ill-fitting one won’t, especially during movement like walking, dancing, or going down a flight of stairs.

Let’s talk about how to measure bra size at home.

Understanding the basics

First of all, it is important to note that bra size changes with lifestyle and age. Bra size also varies among brands.

So, how to determine bra size correctly? Bust size and band size are the measurements that will help you find bra size that fits you the best.

Is Your Bra Size Right?

If you notice the following signs while checking your bra fitting, then you might not be wearing a right bra size:

  • Straps digging into shoulders or slipping off.
  • Underwire poking or digging into skin.
  • Back band riding up or feeling too tight.
  • Lack of support or uncomfortable pressure on breasts.
  • Uneven or bulging appearance.
  • Constant readjustment throughout the day.
  • Overall discomfort or pain while wearing the bra.
  • Visible bra lines or indentation on skin.
  • Feeling self-conscious or unhappy with the bra's appearance.

How to Measure Bra Size at Home?

How To Measure For A Bra

How to Measure Band Size?

  1. Stand in an upright position.
  2. Measure under your bust using a measuring tape.
  3. Make sure the tape is parallel to the ground and does not twist.
  4. The tape should not be too loose or too tight. Note the measurement.

How to Measure Bust Size?

  1. Make sure you are wearing a non-padded bra for an accurate measurement.
  2. Stand straight with your arms at your sides
  3. Wrap the measuring tape around the fullest part of your bust.
  4. Make sure the tape is parallel to the ground and does not twist.
  5. The tape should not be too loose or too tight.
  6. Note the number you see on the tape.

Note: Inches are the preferable unit, and make sure that both measurements are in the same unit.

How to Measure Cup Size?

Subtract your band size from your bust size. The difference is your cup size and is determined as follows:

  • 0" = AA
  • 1" = A
  • 2" = B
  • 3" = C
  • 4" = D
  • 5" = DD
  • 6" = F
  • 7" = FF
  • 8" = G
  • 9" = GG
  • 10"  = H
  • 11" = HH

And so on.

Combine your band and cup size to get the benchmark measurement, such as 35D.

The right fit also depends on the fabric and style of the bra.

Put a body-hugging t-shirt or blouse over a bra when trying on a bra. A correct-fitting bra will not show any bulges or impressions on the chest or near the armpits, and you should feel as if you are not wearing a bra at all.
