How To Choose The Right Incontinence Product

How To Choose The Right Incontinence Product

Incontinence is an accidental or involuntary loss of urine from the bladder or bowel motion, feces, or wind from the bowel.

Choosing The Correct Incontinence Product

There are hundreds of incontinence products available in the market. But the biggest dilemma is to choose the one that fits your needs. Here are a few tips to get you through comfortably so that choosing a product is not an issue ever again:

1. Types of Incontinence Supplies

To get relief from this situation different types of absorbent products are available. It is important to understand what exactly the product does and which product is right for your personal need. Decide the product as per its special features, brand, and cost.

  • Incontinence pads and liners  - Incontinence pads and liners are easily available in a variety of shapes and sizes. With the help of adhesive strips, pads, and liners, they can be secured to undergarments. They are easy to replace when soiled. Pads and liners are the right solutions for those suffering from light incontinence.

  • Belted or Beltless undergarments - Belted undergarments are pads or liners which have a strap that can be worn with or without regular undergarments. There are several brands offering belted undergarments that are generally effective for moderate to heavy protection. These provide a but with exceptional polymer-assisted fluid-retention quality.  Beltless undergarments can be worn inside ordinary underwear, with mesh pants or waterproof pants. They provide a moderate level of protection but with exceptional polymer-assisted fluid-retention quality. They adhere to the underwear or pants with an adhesive strip for secure placement. Some of these can also be used for fecal incontinence.

  • Disposable briefs - They are more commonly known as adult diapers. Disposable briefs and diapers for adults are highly absorbent and are often used for heavy incontinence. Kendall, Tranquility & Tena offers great absorbency with adult briefs made of comfortable and breathable material. They are skin friendly and can be used on the go. These protective undergarments typically offer the most consistent leakage protection and are most secure in terms of fit and staying in place.

2. The One That Matches the Level of Incontinence!

The first step is to determine the level of incontinence. It's best if they also keep in mind whether they want products that are reusable or disposable. A simple list is given below for determining a person's level of urinary incontinence

  • Light - drizzling and occasional urine release
  • Moderate –large releases of urine but not a full bladder
  • Heavy - release of a full bladder in the daytime
  • Overnight - release of urine throughout the night
  • Fecal - loss of bowel control

3. The One That Fits Right!

The next step while choosing the right incontinence product is an important one. Once the person has identified the brand and style that they want and identified the single product that will work best, it's time to choose the right adult diaper sizes. To determine what product size to select, carefully measure the waist and hip size of the person. Use the larger of the two measurements to select the size to use.

Carefully use the given table in the product's description to choose the correct size. It is important to remember every brand and style may have a slightly different fit and measurement for a particular size. Don't depend on a stated size being the same measurements for every manufacturer.

For example, a medium in one product might not be the same size as a medium in a different brand of product. A snug fit around the legs is important to help prevent urine and/or fecal leakage.

4. Always Consider the Gender!

People are many a time surprised to see that many incontinence products are gender specific. Many manufacturers develop gender-specific incontinence products to protect the areas where each gender needs it the most.

Maybe not every incontinence product is gender specific, but you should take the gender of the user into consideration so that you can choose the right incontinence product for them. Having the protection where the user needs it the most can make the right incontinence product much more effective.

5. Is Discreet Enough

Discreteness is a very important part of the precaution for many people dealing with incontinence. If discreteness is important for you, there are several options available. One of the options is to use a cloth-like outer covering, which helps to numb the sound of plastic. Earlier, all incontinence products came with a plastic backing, but today cloth-like backing is more common.

Also, some manufacturers have developed a compact core to reduce the weight of the products. Another choice is to wear loose clothing so the product does not show clearly. Then there is the reusable underwear and panties with built-in padding or pouches for the padding.
