Ringworm appears as a raised red circle rash with clear center. This infection typically attacks the skin but can also affect hair and nails and thrives in warm, humid environments. Ringworm can spread easily.  It is commonly found on towels and sports equipment which is why Athletes are at high-risk of contracting ringworm, especially those involved in contact sports.

Home remedies for ringworm can clear the irritation, but the infection must be completely eradicated to avoid further spreading. When trying a ringworm treatment at home, you must make sure the infection is completely eradicated or it will continue to spread.

"An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure", this old saying goes a long way when discussing fungal infections. To prevent the spread of ringworm, there are several important things to remember:

  3. Keep skin clean and dry

If you are caring for a person or pet that has contracted ringworm, make sure to wash your hands, wear gloves and quickly dispose of them when finished with treatment. Also disinfect any areas that the person or animal may have come into contact with.

You may already have some of these ingredients in your home. The following are the most effective ways to treat ringworm at home:

  1. Tea Tree Oil: It has many amazing properties and is used for many issues, such as acne, oily skin, insect bites, and itchy rashes. It can also be a powerful way to cure ringworm. Add a few drops of tea tree oil with a carrier oil (like coconut oil) and apply it directly to the infection site several times a day.
  2. Coconut Oil: Since we mentioned coconut oil, not only is it a fantastic moisturizer, but it also has antifungal properties which can help clear up the ringworm rash. Apply a light layer to the rash several times a day.
  3. Aloe Vera: This gel of this plant isn’t just for sunburn. When using aloe vera for ringworm, it will quickly soothe the itch and inflammation of the rash.
  4. Garlic: A spice that has been used for medicinal purposes for centuries, the antifungal properties of garlic can help cure ringworm fast. Peel some cloves of garlic, crush them and make a paste. Apply it to the affected area directly and rinse off after 30 minutes.
  5. Apple Cider Vinegar: The itching and inflammation of a ringworm rash can be eased by mixing a ratio of 50% water and 50% apple cider vinegar. Apply to the ringworm rash and let dry. Once the mixture has dried on the skin, rinse off with clean water.
  6. Turmeric: Many arthritis sufferers take turmeric supplements to reduce inflammation. It also has antifungal properties which can help fight ringworm. Mix water and turmeric powder to make a paste. Apply it to the affected area and let dry. Once it is dry, rinse with clean water.
  7. Saltwater: Keep the area clean by soaking the rash in warm saltwater for 15 minutes a few times a day. Saltwater also has a mild antifungal effect on the skin.
  8. Keep the Area Clean and Dry: Infections love humid environments, so make sure to keep the rash dry and clean. This will keep ringworm from spreading.
  9. O-T-C Antifungals: There are many over-the-counter medications available which are formulated to fight fungal infections like ringworm. Look for creams, lotions or powers with these active ingredients: clotrimazole, miconazole, or terbinafine.

It is important to note that if the rash is not healing properly, becomes severe or is not improving, contact your doctor. Treat the infection until it is completely cleared. Ringworm can be difficult to treat and must be entirely healed before you are considered free from the infection and non-contagious.
