5 Ways to Rethink Your New Year's Resolutions

If achieving that goal was easy, the magazines you see while standing in line at the grocery store wouldn't be taunting you with the same attention-grabbing headlines year after year: “NEW YEAR, NEW BODY!” “DROP 2 SIZES BY VALENTINE’S DAY!”, “RING IN THE NEW YEAR & LOSE 10 LBS EVERY WEEK!” Those magazines are known as an impulse buy, something that you didn't necessarily go into the store to purchase, and they are designed to attract the attention of a captive audience. There's not much you can do while you're waiting there in line, but if that headline speaks to you, you will put that magazine in your cart.

Albert Einstein once said, "the definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results." But year after year, we seem to approach New Year's Resolutions the same way, hoping for a favorable outcome that never seems to happen. Something needs to change if we're making the same resolutions. We may need to approach them differently.

Let's take a look at the same goal from two different approaches:

New Year's Resolution – Lose 25 pounds

  • January 1 – It's a holiday; I'll start tomorrow. Heck, I have all year!
  • January 2 – I'm at the gym. What a great start! Go me!
  • January 3 – I went to the gym yesterday. I don't have to go today.
  • January 4 – There are still so many holiday cookies around. Everything in moderation, right? 1 or 2 won't hurt.
  • January 10 – It's too cold to go for a walk.
  • January 31 – I haven't been to the gym since January 2. Ugh! What's wrong with me?
  • February 1 – (going through a fast-food drive-thru again) Well, it looks like my New Year's Resolution to lose 25 pounds isn't going to happen.

Now let's set ourselves up to win!

New Year's Resolution – Be a healthier me

  • January 1 – It's a brand-new year! I'm going to get to bed a half hour earlier than I usually do.
  • January 2 – I'm so glad I got that extra half-hour sleep. I'm going to take a walk at lunchtime.
  • January 3 – That walk I took at lunchtime yesterday made me feel great. I'm going to do that again today.
  • January 4 – I'll bring these holiday cookies to the office. I don't need them around the house.
  • Mid-January – That extra half hour of sleep and the walks I've been taking at lunchtime have made me feel great! Wow! I lost 3 pounds!
  • January 31 – I can't believe I have been getting more sleep and exercise! Go me!
  • February 1 – My clothes fit better, and I feel great! My New Year's Resolution was to be a healthier me, and it's working!

It is all about the approach. "I have to lose 25 pounds" vs. "I want to be healthier" are two totally different ways of looking at the same goal. Setting that 25-pound goal is an invitation for failure because it's just too big. However, when the aim is to be healthier, you can make that choice every minute of every day, and even if you slip up, there's always the next minute to do better. Take a step back and look at what you want to accomplish. Do you want to fit into clothes that are now in the back of your closet? Do you want to feel healthier? Do you want to be able to take a walk or a hike with your grandchildren and not feel out of breath? Once you know what you want to achieve, you can set an attainable goal, and the journey may even be fun!
