A foley catheter, also known as an indwelling urinary catheter, is a flexible tube passed through the urethra to the bladder in order to drain urine. It has an inflatable balloon on one end that keeps it in place while the other attaches to a urinary drainage bag collecting urine.
There are two types of drainage bags – a foley catheter leg bag and a foley catheter night bag (also known as a bedside drainage bag).
A leg bag is only used during the day, whether engaging with your daily routine or going out. It is attached to your catheter and worn on the thigh, slightly lower than the level of your bladder. However, the leg bag can also be attached to the calf by using extension tubing.
Leg bags are versatile. They come in different sizes and styles with button and Velcro closures. They are attached to the leg with the help of leg bag straps. The straps are tied to your leg, and the bag is secured with the buttons. However, if you do not like using straps, you can also experiment with leg bag holders, a type of legging with a pocket to securely hold a leg bag.
Important things to remember:
A foley catheter night bag or an overnight urinary drainage bag is larger than a leg bag and has long extension tubing. These bags hold more urine than a leg bag, so the user does not have to get up in the middle of the night, disrupting sleep, in order to empty the bag.
The long extension tube allows you to move around in bed without accidentally pulling or disturbing the catheter. Because they are larger than day bags, these bags cannot be tied to your legs. Instead, they are hung on the side of the bed and should be hung lower than your bladder level to allow easy urine flow.
Night bags also come in various sizes and styles, have varying closure valves, and have a capacity between 2000mL and 4000mL.
Also, remember that sometimes, it is all about trial and error, and you may have to try a few different types to find the right one for you.
