7 Best Foley Catheter Bags

7 Best Foley Catheter Bags
HPFY Staff Writer

A foley catheter, also known as an indwelling urinary catheter, is a flexible tube passed through the urethra to the bladder in order to drain urine. It has an inflatable balloon on one end that keeps it in place while the other attaches to a urinary drainage bag collecting urine.

There are two types of drainage bags – a foley catheter leg bag and a foley catheter night bag (also known as a bedside drainage bag).

Leg Bag

A leg bag is only used during the day, whether engaging with your daily routine or going out. It is attached to your catheter and worn on the thigh, slightly lower than the level of your bladder. However, the leg bag can also be attached to the calf by using extension tubing

Leg bags are versatile. They come in different sizes and styles with button and Velcro closures. They are attached to the leg with the help of leg bag straps. The straps are tied to your leg, and the bag is secured with the buttons. However, if you do not like using straps, you can also experiment with leg bag holders, a type of legging with a pocket to securely hold a leg bag.

Caring For Your Leg Bag

Important things to remember:

  • Tubing should fit the length of your calf with your leg slightly bent. Any extra length should be cut off.
  • Use a leg strap to secure the leg bag to your thigh or calf.
  • Ensure the straps are not too tight, as they can restrict the blood flow.
  • Empty the bag when it is 3/4th full. Do not wait for it to fill completely.
  • Do not lie down for more than 2 hours while wearing the leg bag.

Night Drainage Bag

A foley catheter night bag or an overnight urinary drainage bag is larger than a leg bag and has long extension tubing. These bags hold more urine than a leg bag, so the user does not have to get up in the middle of the night, disrupting sleep, in order to empty the bag.

The long extension tube allows you to move around in bed without accidentally pulling or disturbing the catheter. Because they are larger than day bags, these bags cannot be tied to your legs. Instead, they are hung on the side of the bed and should be hung lower than your bladder level to allow easy urine flow.

Night bags also come in various sizes and styles, have varying closure valves, and have a capacity between 2000mL and 4000mL.

Caring For Your Night Bag

  • Keep the night bag below your bladder level.
  • Line a garbage bin with a clean plastic bag and hang the drainage bag on the inside of it.

Points To Consider While Choosing A Drainage Bag

  • Quality: The drainage bag should be high-quality, reliable, and durable. It should be strong enough to hold milliliters of urine for hours and not burst or tear. It should protect from accidents and embarrassment.
  • Budget: You will need the drainage bags for as long as you use a catheter. This may require multiple purchases, so search for products that fit your budget.
  • Online Reviews: Before ordering, make sure to check product reviews. The real experiences of actual users will help you to decide which one is right for you.
  • Additional features: Research the different features offered, such as anti-reflux valves, flip-flo design, length of extension tubing, odor reduction, and any other available accessories.

Also, remember that sometimes, it is all about trial and error, and you may have to try a few different types to find the right one for you.
