How To Develop A Skin Care Routine

How To Develop A Skin Care Routine

Skincare has been the talk of the town for years and remains a hot topic among men and women alike. But more than answers, there is confusion and misinformation making the rounds on the internet. Healthy skin glows differently with a dewy smooth skin texture and radiance that signifies health and vitality. Lifestyle choices, skincare routine, and eating habits play a huge role in managing good skin.

A good skincare routine keeps your skin supple and improves collagen and elastin production. Both of these are formed by fibroblasts that help form the extracellular matrix. Collagen provides strength to the skin cells, and elastin offers elasticity.

How to develop a skincare routine

Most people find skin routines arduous, which may be true for the elaborate Korean 7-step skincare routine you see on Instagram. However, there are more simplified routines you can develop to ensure your skin gets the care it deserves.

Here is how you can develop a good skincare routine to achieve glowing skin.

How to Build the Best Skincare Routine

1. Know your skin type

Is your skin dry or oily? Is it prone to redness or swelling? Do you have an oily T zone? Skincare is personal, and what suits your best friend may not suit you. Therefore, understanding your skin is essential to make better product choices.

2. Understand that Cleansing is crucial

It goes without saying that cleansing must be the first step of any skincare routine. Use a gentle cleanser that helps balance pH levels and removes impurities, dirt, and excess oil. Use your cleanser and lukewarm water to wash your face in the morning and then again before going to bed. Pat skin dry with a clean towel.

3. Follow With A Moisturizer

Cleansing can make your skin dry. Moisturizer gives the skin its water content back. Apply it immediately after cleansing. If you have oily skin, use an oil-free moisturizer. Similarly, if you have dry skin, look for a moisturizer formulated for your skin type.

4. Exfoliate Regularly

Pollution and dirt aren’t the only things that can make your complexion dull. Our skin is constantly making new cells which become trapped beneath dead cells on the skin’s surface. Exfoliation sloughs off the buildup and makes the skin fresh and radiant. Use physical exfoliants like face scrubs or peels once or twice a week, but don’t overdo it. Over-exfoliating can lead to irritation.

5. Get Your Sunscreen On

The sun’s harmful UV rays can cause burning, skin damage, and visible signs of aging. Sunscreen acts as a protective barrier allowing your skin to function optimally and maintain its natural balance. Apply sunscreen to all exposed skin before going outdoors. When the sun is at its strongest, stay in the shade or wear lightweight clothing and a hat to cover the scalp. Sunscreens with broad-spectrum protection block UVA and UVB rays and reduce the risk of developing skin cancer, including basal cell carcinoma, melanoma, and squamous cell carcinoma.

These are the things to look for when choosing a sunscreen:

  • SPF 30 or above
  • Broad-spectrum to protect against UVA and UVB rays
  • Formulated for your skin type

6. Take Vitamin C

Serums and creams with Vitamin C brighten skin tone, and topical and oral Vitamin C help boost collagen production and may also minimize wrinkles and fine lines. If you have dry skin, apply a layer of vitamin C cream or serum with a moisturizer to keep it hydrated.

7. Remove Makeup

Always remove makeup before going to bed since it can lead to breakouts and make your skin dull. Use an alcohol-free or oil-based cleanser, whichever seems right for your skin type.

8. Change your skincare with the seasons

Adjusting your skincare routine to the changing seasons is also a great way to keep your skin healthy. Since summer can make your skin dry, switch to oil-based face packs, cleansers, light toners, and a moisturizer with sunscreen. In the winter, use skin products and lip balms that have more moisturizing ingredients.

If you have any underlying skin allergies or chronic conditions, consult a dermatologist before using any products. Consistency is the key. Whether it is skin care products or home remedies for clear skin, it will take time to improve the look of your skin.

Remember, your skin is unique. Skincare is tailor-made and not one-size-fits-all. Before using any product or home remedy, consider doing a patch test to see how your skin reacts.
