All about Heel Pain

How powerful is the heel?

The legs are one of the most important and indispensable part of movement for a person. The advanced functions of the legs and its various parts make us a highly physically evolved species. The legs are built in such a way that they can endure more than 50 tonnes of stress within a very short period of time. The heels are the foundation structures of the legs and activities like running, walking, and jumping rely on the heels. The heels bones and the muscles together form a very strong unit.

What causes problems in the heel?

The heel can endure a lot of stress on a regular basis, but the tenacity of the heel depends from person to person and not everyone can endure a lot of stress on their heel. Many a time excessive stress on the heel can result in severe heel pain. This also affects the ankle and the foot in whole. A sore heel is a major problem associated with excessive work out and stressing out the heel muscles. Inflammation of the heel muscles, tenderness of the tendons, and weakening of the muscles are some of the other problems associated with he heel.

  • Plantar Fasciitis - Inflammation of the plantar fascia causes and runs all across the tip of the foot. The pain reaches the bone and soon affects the Achilles tendon.
  • Heel Bursitis - Inflammation of the bursa at the back of the heel is a result of ill shaped footwear and causes pain deep inside the heel. It also might cause the Achilles tendon to swell.
  • Heel Bumps - Common among teenagers, when the heel isn’t fully formed it rubs a lot and causes the growth of extra bone which causes pain. It can also be caused by wearing high heels at a very young age.
  • Stress Fracture - Excessive exercises, sports activity, or manual work can exert extra stress on the heels and the muscles thus causing fractures in the bone that can in turn result in inflammation of the muscles and the joints.

What are the treatment options?

Different problems related to the heel have different ways of treatment for example a bruise usually goes away with minor medication and rest but a problem like plantar fasciitis specific exercises, medication, and the use of heel pads. Items such as heel pads, heel supports, and braces are some of the most common things used by individuals at home during the treatment of heel pain.

Are There Any Precauations or Home Remedies?

One can take a number of precautions to make sure that their heels are safe from any injury or damage.

  • Rest - Taking rest and giving the heel a rest are both an important part of maintaining a healthy heel. The muscles should be relaxed and there shouldn’t be constant pressure on the bones either.
  • Ice - Ice works like magic on stressed out muscles and ligaments. But make sure you wrap it up in something and don’t expose the naked skin for a long time, as it can cause rashes.
  • Proper Footwear - Wearing the right sized and correct footwear is highly important as an ill-placed heel can get damaged far more easily than the other.
