Topical analgesics are generally recommended to avoid systemic side-effects. They are gels that are applied to painful joints, sprains, and muscle aches. The chemicals in these gels are either heat inducing or cold inducing chemicals that react with the skin to produce a heated or a cold effect. This in turn acts against the pain in the body. They are a very common ointment used my scores of people around the world. They come in various options. Some have a varying color, while some have a different smell; some feel different whereas some are specifically used for some body parts.

Types of Topical Analgesics

There are a number of topical anagesics that work using different constituents and therapies.

Counterirritants - Menthol or camphor infused gels and creams create a burning or cooling sensation that distracts your mind from the pain. They are great at temporary pain relief.

Salicylates - They can be easily absorbed into the skin and work my relaxing the muscles and helping releive pain. They are useful for fingers, knees, elbow, and other such joints.

Capsaicin - Also found in chillies, this ingredient if one of the most effective in dealing with pains. It is used for joint pains and diabetic nerve pain. A burning sensation is felt on the skin which slowly reduces as it is absorbed by the skin.
