The Old Way - Fixed Pressure CPAP

The Old Way - Fixed Pressure CPAP
Taikhum Sadiq

Continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) machines were initially used mainly by patients for the treatment of sleep apnea at home, but now are in widespread use across intensive care units as a form of ventilation. Obstructive sleep apnea is a condition that occurs when the upper airway narrows as the muscles relax naturally while you sleep. This reduces the amount of oxygen in the blood and causes to awaken in the middle of the night. The CPAP machine stops this event by delivering a stream of compressed air via a tube to a nasal pillow, nose mask, full-face mask, or hybrid, splinting the airway so that you can breathe without any hindrance. It is very important to understand, however, that it is the air pressure, and not the movement of the air, that prevents the apneas. When the machine is turned on, a flow of air comes through the mask. After the mask is placed on the head, it is sealed to the face and the air stops flowing. At this point, it is only the air pressure that accomplishes the desired result. This has the additional benefit of reducing or eliminating the extremely loud snoring that sometimes accompanies sleep apnea.

A fixed pressure machine can be set and always stays at one pressure level at all times. The pressure is as given to you by your doctor or sleep clinic and is used as based on your requirements. An important thing to consider is that your prescribed pressure is likely to change over time. Factors such as gaining or losing weight can affect the severity of apnea thus the change in the required CPAP pressure.

There are many machines that are very well equipped to help you through this. The Devilbiss IntelliPAP Standard CPAP System With SmartCode is intended for use in treating obstructive sleep apnea in patients. It features reliable electronics and water resistant housing to its durable lexan humidifier chamber and stainless steel heat transfer plate.

Another great machine is the Devilbiss IntelliPAP Standard Plus Fixed Pressure CPAP System With SmartFlex Technology is designed for the effective treatment of Obstructive Sleep Apnea. Its robust ergonomic design and its small size make it the ideal travelling companion. HDM Z1 Base Fixed Pressure Travel CPAP Machine is also an ideal travel machine. It literally fits in the palm of hand so the user will never have to leave CPAP at home. It is the smallest, lightest, most integrated CPAP machine compatible with the PowerShell.
