Linda Guerrera

Did you ever stop to think about how the foods you eat impact your health? While we may have it drilled into our brains that we need to eat right to be healthy, did you ever stop to really think about how the foods we eat can affect us?

We are all aware that fried and processed foods can negatively affect our bodies. Eating foods high in saturated fats can cause inflammation, which can lead to an unhealthy situation in our lungs.

Let’s look at the nine worst foods for the lungs and what we can do to boost our immunity and maintain good lung function.

The Nine Worst Foods For Lungs

1. Processed Foods

At the top of the list of the worst foods for lungs are processed foods. According to Harvard.edu, avoid foods that are high in unhealthy fats, sugars, and additives. These foods can weaken your immune system and cause inflammation, which affects the lungs. Stay away from foods like chips, French fries, cakes and cookies.

Reasons to Avoid Processed Foods

  • Lack nutrients
  • Raise blood sugar
  • Can cause weight gain
  • Increases risk of diabetes and cancer

2. Fried Foods

Harvard Health Publishing also notes to avoid fried foods for overall health. When foods are fried, they release harmful compounds that can cause inflammation, which can affect various systems in the body, including heart and lung function.

Reasons to Avoid Fried Foods

  • High in fat
  • Poor nutritional value
  • Weakens immune system

3. Excessive Sodium

Adding too much food to your diet can cause the body to retain fluid, making it harder for your lungs to work properly. Too much sodium causes fluid retention, which makes the heart and lungs work overtime. The Cleveland Clinic notes that to properly cut down on sodium, look for it in places you might not even think about. Even fresh poultry is injected with or packaged in salt. Read the nutrition labels on all of the foods you purchase, and especially take notice of foods like cheeses, canned soups and vegetables, deli meat, and condiments.

Reasons to Avoid Excessive Salt

  • Causes fluid retention
  • Can cause kidney issues
  • Increases risk of heart disease and stroke

4. Sugary Drinks

Excess sugar can cause weight gain and inflammation, which makes it one of the worst foods for the lungs.

Reasons to Avoid Sugary Drinks

  • Increases weight gain
  • The top cause of diabetes
  • Compromises immune system

5. Dairy Products

Dairy can be tough for some people and can cause the body to produce excess mucus, which can lead to breathing difficulties.

Reasons to Avoid Dairy Products

  • Can be difficult to digest
  • Linked to prostate cancer
  • Aggravates irritable bowel syndrome

6. Trans Fats

Many fried and processed foods contain trans fats, which increase inflammation and increase the risk of lung disease.

Reasons to Avoid Trans Fats

  • Causes inflammation
  • Raises bad cholesterol
  • Lowers good cholesterol
  • Increases risk of insulin resistance

7. Alcohol

Consuming alcohol, especially in high quantities, can weaken the immune system and increase your risk of respiratory infections.

Reasons to Avoid Alcohol

  • Causes liver disease
  • This leads to weight gain
  • Interferes with memory

8. High-Cholesterol Foods

Red meats and full-fat dairy are foods that contain a high amount of cholesterol, which can cause inflammation and negatively impact lung health.

Reasons to Avoid High-Cholesterol Foods

  • Can lead to stroke
  • Increases risk of heart disease
  • Compounds bad cholesterol blood levels

9. Soy

While generally considered healthy, soy can be one of the worst foods for the lungs because it can cause issues for some people. Soy can trigger allergic reactions or sensitivities that might affect lung function.

Reasons to Avoid Soy

  • Can cause hypothyroidism
  • Increases estrogen levels in men
  • Reduces estrogen levels in women
  • Causes poor absorption of essential minerals

Remember, individual responses can vary widely and depend on many things, such as health conditions, allergies, family history, etc. For optimal lung and overall health, a balanced diet rich in lean protein, whole grains, fruits, vegetables, and healthy fats is always the right choice.

What Are The Best Foods For Lung Health?

Now that we know the unhealthy choices let’s look at the best foods for lung health.

  • Antioxidants: Berries are high in antioxidants and a delicious way to get your daily supply. Fruits, nuts, leafy greens, and other vegetables also contain antioxidants, which can help reduce inflammation and protect lung tissues from damage caused by free radicals.
  • Omega-3 Fatty Acids: Salmon, mackerel, and other fatty fish are rich in omega-3s. Flaxseeds and walnuts are other great sources that have anti-inflammatory properties that may benefit lung health.
  • Vitamin C: Vitamin C is a great way to boost your immune system and help maintain healthy lung tissue. You can find it naturally in citrus fruit, strawberries, broccoli, and bell peppers.
  • Vitamin E: Another way to protect the cells in your lungs is with vitamin E, a powerful antioxidant found in nuts, seeds, and leafy greens.
  • Magnesium: To support muscle function, including the muscles that support breathing, magnesium should be on your list. Natural sources of magnesium include spinach, almonds, and avocados.
  • Selenium: This essential mineral supports and protects lung tissue from free radicals. It is found in Brazil nuts, fish, and whole grains.
  • Folate: Folate boosts the production of red blood cells and maintains healthy lungs. Leafy greens, beans, and lentils are great sources of this essential vitamin.
  • Curcumin: Turmeric is a fantastic antioxidant with anti-inflammatory properties. You can find curcumin in turmeric.
  • Garlic: Garlic adds flavor to foods, and it also has incredible antimicrobial properties and can help fight off respiratory infections.
  • Ginger: Another way to cook with healthy ingredients is to add ginger. This spice has anti-inflammatory and immune-boosting properties that can support overall respiratory health.

When you are making a conscious effort to be healthy and boost lung health, there are other things to remember in addition to these specific nutrients. Make sure to drink enough water to stay well-hydrated. Get regular exercise to maintain and increase lung function. And don’t smoke! Avoiding cigarettes, exposure to secondhand smoke, and limiting your exposure to air pollution and other irritants are important for healthy lungs.
