Let’s Get 40 Winks: Beating Insomnia

Let’s Get 40 Winks: Beating Insomnia
Kevin Cleary

We all crave a restful, full night’s sleep. Unfortunately, this eludes some people and they can end up with a restless night sleep making them fatigued and tired the next day. According to mayoclinic.org, the average adult requires 7-8 hours of sleep a night. While this may vary from person to person, the inability to get a good night’s sleep can be counterproductive at best. To combat insomnia sometimes all you need to do is make some small changes.

Symptoms of Insomnia

Insomnia affects everyone slightly different, but there are several symptoms to look out for. One of the most common symptoms is difficulty falling and staying asleep. When we hear insomnia the first thing we think of this not being able to fall asleep at night, but there are other warning signs. Daytime tiredness and sleepiness is another way to determine if you are suffering from insomnia. Mayoclinic.org also identifies irritability, depression, or anxiety as well as an increase in errors and tension headaches as possible indicators. A person affected by insomnia may require 30 minutes or more to fall asleep and stay asleep for less than the average adult.

What Causes This?

When someone is identified as an insomniac, the next step is attempting to identify the cause. Many different external factors may go into the onset of insomnia. Stress can be a trigger to preventing a good night sleep. Work, family issues, or even our loving children can create enough stress to keep us up at night. Insomniacs can also suffer from anxiety, therefore keeping them awake. Issues such as posttraumatic stress disorder or other anxiety disorders can affect sleep patterns. Our medical condition can also affect the way we sleep through the night. Conditions such as arthritis, lung disease, or even any kind of heartburn have been linked to insomnia. One area that may not be as obvious to cause insomnia is the medication that we take. Medications such as allergy medications, Ritalin, and blood pressure medication can interfere with our sleep. Of course, some obvious food choices should be avoided. Anything with sugar or caffeine should not be consumed just before bedtime

Combating Insomnia

There are a few ways you can tackle this issue depending on what’s causing your insomnia. For instance, someone affected by this disorder could try the BIOflex Eye Mask and benefit from its concentric circle magnets for relaxation. Another way to improve sleep is to use the Therion Magnetic Eye Mask . It uses comforting magnetic therapy for sleep and stress relief by increasing blood circulation and oxygenation while still being comfortable and encouraging a good night’s sleep. Making changes to your sleeping environment is another option. The Therion System 2000 Neodymium Magnetic Mattress Pad combines the comfort of soft memory foam and the soothing relief of magnetic therapy to allow the user to wake up refreshed and ready to take on the day!! For those that have trouble sleeping on the road, the Therion Travel Magnetic Mattress Topper can reduce stress and relax tired muscles away from home. Proper sleeping posture is also important to getting a good night’s sleep. Using a pillow such as the Chiroflow Water Pillow goes a long way to achieving that. It is therapeutically designed to conform to the user’s head and neck and is precisely filled to relieve stress, pressure, and tension. It’s like sleeping on a cloud!! One alternative therapy for combating insomnia can be Aromatherapy . By using calming scents, the user can create an atmosphere conducive to falling asleep. Try using Amrita Aromatherapy Chamomile German Blue Essential Oil to create your dream world. It is steam distilled from the German chamomile fragrant herb and has a deep inky blue color. Pairing your favorite fragrance with the Aromatherapy Fan with Oils can replace the Sandman or counting sheep!! It’s extremely frustrating not being able to get a full, restful night sleep, but rest assured (no pun intended) there are tools to help you get to sleep and awaken fresh and alert.
