8 Tips To Winterize Your Home

8 Tips To Winterize Your Home
Kevin Cleary

It is time to winterize our homes to ensure a healthy and safe season Health Products For You has some tips to help you winterize your residence, save money, and stay healthy.

Along with shorter days, longer nights, and colder temperatures come higher home heating costs. With prices rising everywhere, finding ways to winterize your home can help you save some money, as well as stay comfortable.

Old Man Winter Is Coming

Unfortunately, the warmer weather is now a distant memory. Days are getting shorter and nighttime low temperatures are well…getting lower. With inflation soaring and prices increasing, finding ways to keep your home warm without turning up the heat is important and economical. The key is finding ways to keep the cold air outside and the warm air inside. This can be a challenge especially in homes that are older and weren’t built as tightly sealed and efficient. When looking to winterize your home there are some places to start:

1. Windows

This can range from simple shrink-wrap to stop drafts, using expandable foam around window frames, or replacement windows which are more efficient.

2. Doors

Stopping drafts along the floor is one way to keep cold air out and warm air in. Also, weatherstripping around the doorframe can help doors seal more efficiently. Keeping the flue closed can minimize colder, denser air from entering the home. Since open fireplaces are less efficient, stove inserts can help minimize cold air back draft but still allow the warmth of the hearth to keep you cozy and warm.

3. Foldable attic stairs

Attics are unheated and can get very cold in the winter. This cold air is denser and can transfer into your home around attic stairs. Weatherstripping and insulating these stairs can help keep cold air out of your home.

4. Air conditioners

Removing window air conditioners is an obvious winterizing chore in order to stay warm. Larger in-wall units should be insulated during the winter months.

5. Garage doors

Making sure that your garage door sits flush against the ground and around the frame of your garage can help keep cold air out. Proper weather stripping around the garage door can help with this.

6. Insulation

Make sure that insulation in your home is up to code. The higher the R-factor of the insulation the better. Also, make sure garage ceilings and crawlspaces are properly insulated.

7. Plumbing

Always ensure that any exposed pipes are properly insulated and make sure all outdoor spigots are turned off. This can help prevent water leaks and damage.

8. Furnace Maintenance

Before each heating season you should have your furnace inspected by a licensed technician. This can ensure that your furnace is operating optimally and there are no risks of carbon monoxide dangers. It is also a great time to check all smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors.
