Respiratory issues affect many people. If frequent headaches, congestion, coughing, facial pressure, and swelling are not new for you, they can be indications of allergies, sinusitis, and upper respiratory problemsOur nostrils are lined with small hairs that catch contaminants in the air we breathe. Clearing these impurities can clear up the many annoying symptoms and provide much-needed relief. A Neti pot is a great way to cleanse the inside of the nose and reduce toxins in the airways. This simple device can be a great way to get through allergy season and can even reduce your need for congestion medicine.

Neti pot benefits

  1. Relieves head congestion
  2. Clears nasal passages
  3. Removes allergens
  4. Moistens dry nasal passages
  5. Treats congested sinuses, colds, and allergies

How to Use a Neti Pot?

Step 1 – Assembling

Gather the neti pot,  saline mix, and clean water to start. Three types of water can be used for the process:

  • Distilled water
  • Boiled and cooled tap water
  • Water passed through a filter to catch microorganisms

If you are using boiled water, make sure that it is cooled to lukewarm after boiling it for 3-5 minutes. If you are using purified or filtered water, according to the Center for Disease Control and Protectionthe label should contain "NSF 53" or "NSF 58"  or  the words "cyst removal" or "cyst reduction."

Step 2 – Preparation

Make sure that the neti pot is clean before using.  Read the instructions on your saline mixture packet and mix thoroughly with the amount of water recommended. Pour the solution into the neti pot.

Step 3 – Performing Neti

The general practice is as follows

  1. Tilt your head to one side.
  2. Insert the Neti pot spout in one nostril.
  3. Raise the pot to begin the flow of water.
  4.  Breathe through your mouth.
  5. Once done, clean your nostrils with tissue to remove any extra mucus and discharge.
  6. Repeat on the other nostril

Step 4 – Cleaning the Pot

Use distilled vinegar or 70% isopropyl alcohol to clean your neti pot. Rinse with distilled water and allow it to air dry. Once dry, wipe it with a paper towel or a clean cotton cloth. There are some Neti pot alternatives available, such as squeeze bottle systems and saline sprays. However, their effectiveness depends on the amount of water used.

Important Points To Keep In Mind

1. Neti Pot Instructions

Using a Neti pot can be tricky for some. Make sure to read the instructions thoroughly before using them.

2. Material

Not every Neti pot is the same.  If you are searching for a lightweight and long-lasting pot that doesn't break, you may opt for one made of plastic. If you are looking for a low-maintenance and sustainable option, you might like to try one made from porcelain.

3. Size and Shape

Check the shape and length of the spout. It should fit properly in your nose, making a seal so there is no water leakage during the flow.

4. Saline Packets

A saline solution is used along with the neti pot. Pre-measured packets are available to mix with water, as mentioned above.  Make sure that the quality of the salt you are using is Pharmaceutical grade and 99.99% non-iodized. The grain size should be small, and it should dissolve easily in water.

Using a Neti pot effectively requires practice, but it can make all the difference in your seasonal allergies and can become an important part of maintaining nasal and respiratory hygiene. Talk to your doctor before using a neti pot, especially if you notice discolored, yellow, or green mucus, persistent nasal blockage, or ear blockage or pain.
