Honoring Dad on Father’s Day

Honoring Dad on Father’s Day
Kevin Cleary

June is for celebrating the fathers in our lives. We have set aside the third Sunday in June to celebrate the patriarchs of our society for all they have done and sacrificed for us. This celebration of fatherhood and male parenting started early in the 20th century as a complement to Mother’s Day. It was initially proposed by Sonora Dodd in 1909 and had its first celebration on June 19, 1910 and we haven’t looked back since.

No More Ties!!

 Honoring Dad on Father’s Day

We are too familiar with the standard Father’s Day gag of a new tie for dad. There are so many great options to honor your father on this day besides the generic gift of a tie. If you have a small inkling as to what your father enjoys doing, finding the proper gift is easy peasy!! Is your dad active or maybe needs help with a medical condition? The key is to get dad something he would not get for himself and shows that you care. Maybe dad enjoys a weekend round of golf, so what could you get to improve his golf game? You should try the Golf Pro Trainer to allow for better balance and improved stability. There’s nothing dad likes better than spending time with the family, so a game like the Golf Putt Game provide hours of family fun indoors and outdoors. It takes the game of shuffleboard and converts it to dad’s favorite pastime… golf!! If your father is a weekend warrior, playing sports like golf and tennis can lead to body aches and pains. One very common affliction is tennis/golf elbow. This is basically inflammation of the tendon in and around the forearm area and can have the pain associated with it relieved by a brace that applies pressure on the forearm. The Elbow Band with ErgoBeads Pressure Pad provides relief from this type of pain. As we all age, we become more susceptible to any type of injury during a physical activity. Preventing an injury before it happens should be the game plan. Benjamin Franklin once said “an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.” Who am I to argue with such a wise man!! The Captain Adjustable Wrist Support can help prevent tendon irritation and inflammation in the wrist area. Since it is adjustable to just about every wrist size and can be worn on either arm, one-size-fits-all.

Help Around the House

 Honoring Dad on Father’s Day

Many dads still think they are 20 something years old and are indestructible. As we age we find that to be slightly incorrect. If dad still likes doing the tough yard work around the house, maybe a good idea is a back brace. This lower back support can help avoid potential back issues down the road from lifting heavy loads. Another potential issue our dads may encounter doing yard work or home improvements is knee problems. The use of knee supports or knee braces cannot only support our aging (and sometimes aching) knees but can also help after suffering an injury to prevent any further damage or recurrence of the injury. These can be simple elastic slip on sleeves or more intricate neoprene systems with supports and straps. Many members of our older generations don’t take precautions for skin cancer when they are outside. The use of sunscreen might be something that our dads might overlook. A great gift basket idea is arranging sunscreen and other skin care products for dad. You could even include insect repellent to ward off mosquitoes that carry diseases such as the Zika or West Nile virus. We should be diligent in making our loved ones wear sunscreen that blocks UVA and UVB sunlight to prevent dangerous melanomas. Don’t forget your lips when using UV protection. Lip balms provide UPF protection to some of our more delicate skin.

Keep Dad Fit… Mentally and Physically

 Honoring Dad on Father’s Day

A sedentary life leads to our bodies not being able to support us in a stable manner. It’s when we lose our stability that we are now susceptible to falls which can lead to breaks and fractures. Flexibility leads to improved stability, so the use of the Body Sport Stretch Strap tracks progress to make sure dad is his nimble old self. Simple resistance exercises can help maintain muscle tone and strength. The use of resistance tubes allows the user to increase or decrease the tension easily to match their fitness level. Many times as men age or suffer from diabetes, our lower extremities can swell. To combat this, compression socks can overcome circulation problems in our lower legs and ankles. This can allow dad to enjoy his favorite activity, even if it’s just walking around the block with mom.

Most dads don’t get their way in the kitchen but look forward to grilling a mean burger or a steak. Gift them a grill or related accessory and make him a happy camper. If Dad is inot healthy eating then he could use a George Foreman Grill in order to drain fat from his favorite snack.

If your dad enjoys playing cards, but age has made it difficult, get dad an automatic card shuffler or a cardholder to overcome any symptoms and pain of arthritis in the hands. You could also stimulate your dad’s senses with a mist fountain or maybe a sound machine to allow dad to relax after a tough day at work. Many options are available for every dad!!

Knowing what your dad’s favorite activities or interests are can go a long way in deciding what gift is perfect for him. If you need a little help deciding, ask mom or one of your siblings, but no matter which direction they point you, we have something for. So browse, shop and surprise the man who pampered you all these years and now deserves some pampering himself. Happy Father’s Day to all the amazing dads out there!
