Gifts for the Senses

Gifts for the Senses
Kevin Cleary

As September comes to a close and October is upon us we are entering the dreaded season of gift giving. Finding the right gift for a friend or relative can be confusing. What do they want? Need? Or could use? The options are limitless, but if your gift recipient enjoys experiencing their senses some unique gifts are available.

Our Senses

 Gifts for the Senses

We use our senses to interact with the world around us, but we can also use them to experience and enjoy it. The sight of a glorious sunrise/sunset or the smell of a fragrant flower enhances our enjoyment of the world around us. Our ears can hear the melodic sound of a child singing and our fingers can enjoy the softness of a kitten. Our five senses are the number one way we communicate and interact with each other. By introducing pleasant sensations we can use our senses to enjoy pleasant stimulants around us. Just using a mist fountain can stimulate our senses of sight and even smell by adding essential oils . Many times when an environment is created that appeases our senses, stress is minimized and we can perform effectively in any situation. Drifting off to bed can be made simpler by soothing sounds of a sound frequency healing machine. Not much can relax you as well as a good massage to get you ready for a good night’s sleep. Whether it’s carefully kneaded muscles, the soothing sounds of the ocean, or the soothing rumble of a thunderstorm; relax and fall asleep!!

Aromatherapy

 Gifts for the Senses

Our olfactory senses can be one of the biggest triggers for memory recollection, not to mention stress relief and easing depression. Pleasant aromas can help us speed up the healing process, and even help us fall asleep (which has its own benefits). Essential oils are available in a variety of scents that have beneficial effects for a multitude of maladies such as rheumatism or helping the respiratory/nervous system. Different scents for different problems!! The easiest way to reap these benefits is through the use of a diffuser . These typically use a pad that is soaked with aromatherapy oils and a fan blows the scent about the room. Sometimes these can be a great alternative to prescribed medications. Many people may choose incense over essential oils. Through the use of an incense inhaler, both loose and sticks of incense can be burned efficiently. Use one of your stronger senses (smell) to relax and unwind after a tough day.

The sense of smell can be put to good use, but the use of soothing sounds and calming sights can all be utilized to improve our everyday doldrums. Use all of your senses to experience the world around you, but make sure to use the same senses to relax and unwind from the environment around you also. Sometimes just simple smells, sounds, or sights can create an environment conducive to relieving stress and improve your quality of life.
