Transparent film dressings are polymer membranes of different thicknesses with an adhesive coating on one side. Additionally, transparent patches are impervious to liquid, water, and bacteria. However, permeable to atmospheric gases and moisture vapor.
The transparency of these film dressings offers visualization of the wound. These are usually used for partial-thickness wounds that have little to no exudate and wounds with necrosis. Transparent films are also to secure IV sites, donor sites, lacerations, abrasions, and burns of the second degree.
It is essential to note that transparent wound dressings have no absorptive capacity, making them unsuitable for wounds with heavy exudate. Subsequently, they may cause wound maceration from the excessive collection of wound exudates. Thus, transparent wound dressings require timely change.
