HPFY Staff Writer

What is a Raised Toilet Seat & How to Choose One

Raised toilet seats are a revolutionary bath safety aid that provides a safe environment to an individual and prevents falls from the commode or toilet seat. These toilet seats that are raised increase the height of the toilet to a comfortable level while decreasing the space between the user and the toilet. Raised toilet seats are also ideal for reducing the burden or stress on hips and knees.

Choosing the right raised toilet seat involves understanding the needs of individuals in accordance with the reason one needs a raised toilet seat and the shape and size of the user and the toilet. There are four major factors one has to take into consideration before choosing a raised toilet seat. They are:

Height of the Elevated Toilet Seats

Understanding what height one requires involves measuring the height of the user and the height of the toilet bowl. First, measure the height of the lower back leg and add two inches to the measurement. Then measure the height of the toilet bowl, but ensure that you do not include the lid and the existing seat. Calculate the difference between the two and the final measurement will be the height of the raised toilet seat you need.

  • For example, the length of the lower back leg is 18 inches. Add two inches, which comes to 20.
  • The height of the toilet bowl excluding the lid and seat is 16 inches.
  • The difference between the two is 4 inches.
  • You need a raised toilet seat of 4 inches in height.

Shape of the Raised Toilet Seats

There are two different types of shapes available in toilet risers, standard round and elongated.

  • Standard Round Raised Toilet Seats – Round raised toilet seats are excellent for people who have a wider hip and have a short or average height. They are great for supporting heavy individuals as well since they spread the weight in a round pressure distribution system
  • Elongated Raised Toilet Seats – Elongated raised toilet seats are ideal for tall patients as they offer great leg space and allow the individual to safely rest their legs without adding pressure or stress on the hips and the legs.

Installation Type of High Rise Toilet Seats

One can choose from four different types of installation mechanisms depending on your toilet seats and the safety level you require.

  • Non-Locking Raised Toilet Seat – Ideal for toilet seats that are used by others as well. They can be easily installed and removed whenever they are needed.
  • Locking With Knob Mechanism – A turn knob raised toilet seat is a great option for users that need safety and stability while using the raised toilet seat but also need the convenience of removing the raised toilet seat.
  • Locking With Tightening Clamps – Tightening clamps on the raised toilet seat adds greater stability and safety and allows the user to easily detach the seat when not in use.
  • Bolted Raised Toilet Seats – Bolted raised toilet seats are the most secure fit and are great for toilet seats that are only used by the individual who requires the added convenience of the raised toilet seat.

Features of Toilet Seat Riser

Raised toilet seats are equipped with a wide range of features that enhance the safety and comfort offered by the raised seats. They include:

  • Lid or No Lid – Lids are a safety feature that allows the user to maintain the hygiene of the seat, but if the user cannot easily lift the lid every time choosing a raised toilet seat without a lid would be a better option.
  • Hinge or No Hinge – Hinged raised toilet seats allow for easy cleaning of the toilet seat as well as the bowl, but in cases where lifting the seat becomes a tedious task, choose the one without hinges.
  • Armrests or No Armrests – Armrests can be a great addition for people who require help during transfer for on and off the raised toilet seat. They can be a hindrance for people who do not require them
  • Contoured Raised Toilet Seats – Contoured raised toilet seats are great for easy transfers and comfortable for sitting. The curve along with the shape of the buttocks thus offering safety and comfort at the same time.
