Chiropractor: Your Savior Against Back Pain

Chiropractor: Your Savior Against Back Pain
Kevin Cleary

If you had debilitating back pain or other discomfort and did not want to delve into the world of painkillers or long physical therapy sessions, would you want to know about another option available? With the opioid dilemma expanding, a nonprescription option for pain relief would be awesome. Well, good news is that there is another option. That option is a chiropractor. Your chiropractor can help alleviate your back pain and get you back on your feet fast.

Who is a Chiropractor?

We have all been to the doctor when we experience pain. Did you know that there was a trained medical professional that is specifically trained in the proper alignment of the spine and pain relief? Maybe you did, but for those who don’t these medical professionals are chiropractors. What many people might not know is the level of education and training chiropractors must go through in order to be licensed. The American Chiropractic Association (ACA) identifies these requirements as:

  • Chiropractic candidates perform a four year undergraduate program before applying to an accredited chiropractic college
  • These chiropractic applicants have already completed courses in biology, anatomy, organic/inorganic chemistry, and related lab work
  • Chiropractic colleges are typically 4-5 academic years of professional study with a significant time being spent in clinical training
  • Typical curriculum includes a minimum of 4, 200 hours of classroom, laboratory, and clinical experience
  • The National Board of Chiropractic Examiners administers board examinations that must be passed in order for state licensing and many states require yearly continuing education for chiropractors to maintain their license

A typical session with a chiropractor could involve a patient laying on a treatment table (Armedica makes a variety of tables) for a spinal alignment. Chiropractors can also use TENS units, which utilize electrical stimulation for pain management (for example the Advanced Orthopedics Dual Channel TENS Unit) and hot and cold packs to alleviate back pain. These hot/cold packs can include the Core Thermal Cervical Contour Pack with the terrycloth cover to protect skin while applying heat/cold therapy.

Benefits of a Chiropractic Care

Back pain can be debilitating and a visit to a chiropractor can be life-changing. If so, what are the benefits of seeing a chiropractor? The World Health Organization does identify chiropractic care as a healthcare profession concerned with the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of disorders of the neuromuscularskeletal system and the effects of these disorders on general health. The benefits of chiropractic care can include:

  1. Improved Sports Performance: Sports injuries, especially back injuries, can benefit from chiropractic care. A sports specific chiropractic treatment can target joints and soft tissue using typical spinal adjusting techniques.
  2. Stimulate Immune System: The nervous system works directly with the immune system and can signal our bodies to heal and repair itself. Chiropractors can help clear the communication between these two body systems.
  3. Wellness and Prevention: Decompression techniques and spinal care can help alleviate issues such as pain and other conditions that could negatively affect everyday activities such as sleep. Avoiding medications that can affect sleep can be an advantage. Let’s face it; a bad night’s sleep will ruin your next day!!
  4. Pregnancy: Many women experience discomfort and back pain during pregnancy and a chiropractor can increase comfort during this time. This can increase the likelihood of an uncomplicated delivery and labor. A chiropractor will help balance the pelvis, muscles, ligaments, as well as relieving pressure on the uterus.
  5. Reduce Chronic Pain: Chronic pain can be managed with the help of dangerous pharmaceuticals or through a chiropractors care. I know what I choose!! With lower back pain one of the most common injuries; a chiropractor can alleviate pain more economically than through traditional medical procedures. While a chiropractor does not remove the cause of pain, they do educate their patients who can be critical in limiting workplace injuries, disability, and cost of care.
  6. Reduce Dependence on Medication: An overwhelming percentage (98%) of those with chronic lower back pain can be treated non-surgically. Unlike pharmaceutical treatments, there are next to no side effects of chiropractic care. Even headaches, migraines, and mood disorders can all be symptoms of spinal misalignment, which is the specific focus of a chiropractor. Drug-free relief is always the better option!!

Alternative medicine and treatments are becoming increasingly popular. This is especially true in the face of the current epidemic of opioid addiction. Chiropractors can help alleviate back pain as part of a comprehensive wellness program. You should always consult a physician to make sure that chiropractic care is appropriate for you.
