The Simple Base 

Ingredients 

  • 2 cups flour 
  • 1 tablespoon sugar 
  • 1 ½ teaspoons baking powder 
  • ½ teaspoon salt 
  • 1 cup buttermilk 
  • 1 egg 
  • ¼ cup melted butter 

How To Make Bread At Home

Step 1: Preheat your oven to 350 degrees.  

Step 2: Grease a 9 x 5 loaf pan with non-stick cooking spray or line it with parchment paper.  

Step 3: Mix flour, sugar, baking powder, and salt in a large bowl.  

Step 4: In a separate bowl, mix buttermilk and egg. Slowly add melted butter. 

Step 5: Pour the buttermilk/egg/butter mixture into the flour mixture.  

Step 6: Mix but don’t overmix or you’ll get a dense dough.  

Step 7: Transfer dough to a greased (or parchment paper-lined) loaf pan. 

Step 8: Place loaf pan in preheated oven and bake for 1 hour. Bread is done when a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.

Add ground coriander to the simple base and slowly stir in a few cloves of finely chopped garlic. Shape dough into small teardrop shapes and place in a preheated oven for 5 minutes.  

3. Turkish Flatbread

Add cumin powder or whole cumin and chopped coriander to the simple base. Make small circles from the dough. Heat a heavy-based frying pan with two tablespoons of oil. Place the dough circles into the frying pan and cook till golden brown. 

4. English Muffins

Mix a teaspoon of sugar and a tablespoon of yogurt into the simple base. Form small muffins with dough. Heat 2 tablespoons of oil in a frying pan and cook muffins until golden brown. 

5. Italian Bread

Add a small amount of olive oil to the simple base. Form a loaf with the dough. Use a serrated knife to make deep slits in the loaf and place it in the preheated oven.
