It was Involuntary – Functional Incontinence

Taikhum Sadiq

Functional incontinence is a type of urinary incontinence during which an individual is usually aware that they need to urinate, but for one or many other physical or mental reasons they are incapable to go to a bathroom. The loss of urine can differ from person to person, some experience small leakages while some experience the complete emptying of the bladder.

Causes - There can be a number of causes for functional incontinence. They include:

  • confusion
  • dementia
  • poor eyesight
  • impaired mobility
  • unwillingness to use the toilet due to depression or anxiety

Functional incontinence is very common in elderly people as ageing causes many problems which in turn might cause functional incontinence. For example if a person suffers from dementia, they might often forget to go to the bathroom and this might result in incontinence.

Functional incontinence can also occur at any random age in many circumstances where there are no apparent medical issues. For example a person may recognize the need to urinate but are unable to do so because there is no toilet or suitable alternative nearby or access to a toilet is restricted or prohibited.

If there is no proper place for urination then the person might reach a stage where they are no longer able to retain urine and then the involuntary voiding of the bladder may take place. Such instances of this sort often result in the full emptying of the bladder, but are very likely to be one-off or rare occurrences. Excessive alcohol consumption can also cause episodes of incontinence in otherwise healthy adults.
