What to buy with Irrigation Syringe

How is Irrigation done?

  • Wash and scrub your hands, fingernails, and fingertips thoroughly.
  • Unpack the sterile components on a dry and flat surface.
  • Put the drape under the connection between the urinary catheter tube and the drainage bag.
  • Pour room-temperature normal saline into the container.
  • Draw 60 ccs of saline into the syringe. (The amount of saline differs from person to person.)
  • Cleanse the connect site with an alcohol swab.
  • Disconnect the catheter from the drainage bag.
  • Insert the tip of the syringe into the catheter tube and gently inject the saline into the catheter.
  • Gently withdraw the fluid from the catheter with the syringe. If the saline contains a large amount of mucous and blood clots, repeat the procedure until most of the mucous has been removed.
  • Detach the syringe from the catheter and let the fluid drain out into the basin.
  • Reattach the catheter tube to the drainage bag.
  • Wash your hands and equipment.
