How to Clean Graham-Field Laryngectomy Tubes?
- Soak trach tube in mild solution (one tablespoon dish soap to one quart of tap water) of dish soap for one hour to dislodge mucus.‚
- Use a clean, appropriately-sized trachea brush, bent to the curve of the trach tube, to clean the inside and outside of the outer cannula and the outside of the inner cannula. You may also use a clean, soft toothbrush to clean the outside and neck plate of the outer cannula.‚
- Place both outer and inner cannulae in a pan of distilled water, bring to a boil, and boil for thirty minutes.‚
- Carefully remove both cannulae from the water with a clean tool. Once cool enough to handle, wipe them dry with a clean, soft cloth.‚
- Inspect the trach tube: ensure the components work and operate freely. Inspect the neck plate swiveling and locking mechanisms and all solder joints. If all components are in good condition, the trach tube is now ready for use.

Note: In addition to the method described below, an ultrasonic cleaner or autoclave may be used to clean trach tubes. You may also cold-soak trach tubes in a formic-acid-based germicidal solution that does not contain phenol; follow the manufacturers recommendations for any of these methods.
Warning: Clean trach tubes before first use, then daily. Remove from stoma before cleaning - Do Not clean while in stoma.
Note: DO Not soak in, wash with, or expose trach tubes to peroxide, enzymatic cleaners, or sodium hydroxide; these chemicals may cause damage to the tubes. Do Not dry-heat sterilize trach tubes. DO NOT expose trach tubes to temperatures above 400‚°F (204.4‚°C).
