How long should you ice your knee?

Applying a cold pack to the affected area decreases blood flow and thus reduces pain and inflammation. Stiffness and inflammation reduce when you apply an ice pack on the knee within 24 hours after knee pain starts. But remember not to overdo icing. You should follow the 20 minutes on/20 minutes off rule. Keep ice pack on your knee for no longer than 20 minutes. Keeping the ice pack in contact to your skin for too long can cause frostbite.
