What is a Vascular Access Device?

A vascular access device (PICC and Ports) is used to access the bloodstream for a longer period of time for administering medications frequently or on a regular basis. These devices are used by patients with diseases like cystic fibrosis who require antibiotic drugs during exacerbation for more than a few days. Regular intravenous catheters can become infected, irritate the veins, or fall out. A PICC line is designed to be used for a longer period like for weeks or a month. They are made up of materials that do not get infected very easily.

Which Vascular Access Device to Buy?

Vascular Access devices include PICC lines and ports. A  peripherally inserted central catheter (PICC) is a flexible long, thin, tube usually inserted into one of the large veins in the patient’s arm. The catheter is then fixed into place with a fixation device or dressing. A PICC line is generally used by medical professionals to deliver IV medications and fluids. It can last for a few weeks reducing the need for needle pricks each time.

A port lasts longer than the PICC and facilitates long term bloodstream access. Along with medications it can also be used repeatedly for IV nutrition and other fluids. It comprises of 2 parts – one is a catheter made up of medical grade rubber and a port attached to it. Ports are implanted beneath the skin. A port stays in place for several years and can be used repeatedly. It is a low maintenance device that does not need to be removed even when IV access is not required.

Your healthcare provider can help you decide what kind of central vascular access device is best for you. For inserting the port in place a minor surgery would be required.
