Frequently Asked Questions About Post-Mastectomy Products

1. What types of mastectomy bras are available?

Mastectomy bras come in many styles designed for different needs: pocketed bras hold breast prostheses securely; front-closure bras are easier to put on post-surgery; seamless bras minimize irritation on sensitive skin; compression bras provide post-surgical support; and sports bras allow active wear. We carry all types in sizes ranging from 32A to 54H.

2. How do I choose the right breast form (prosthesis) after mastectomy?

The right breast form depends on your surgery type (full mastectomy or lumpectomy), desired weight, activity level, and skin sensitivity. Silicone forms have the most natural feel and weight distribution. Lightweight foam forms are cooler and better for active use. Swim forms are chlorine- and saltwater-resistant. Our buying guide walks through each type in detail.

3. Are mastectomy bras and breast forms covered by insurance or FSA?

Yes — under the Women's Health and Cancer Rights Act (WHCRA), insurance plans that cover mastectomy must also cover prostheses and related bras. Many of our products are FSA and HSA eligible. We accept most major insurance plans. Use the FSA Approved filter on this page to shop eligible products, or contact us at 1-866-316-0162 for insurance assistance.

4. When can I start wearing a mastectomy bra after surgery?

Most surgeons recommend waiting 4–6 weeks before wearing a breast prosthesis, but a soft post-surgical bra or camisole can often be worn immediately after surgery. Always follow your surgeon's specific guidance. We offer a full range of post-surgical camisoles and soft bras for the early recovery period.

5. What is the difference between a partial breast form and a full breast prosthesis?

A full breast prosthesis replaces the entire breast following a full mastectomy. A partial breast form (or shaper) is used after a lumpectomy or partial mastectomy to balance asymmetry and fill out the bra on one side. We carry both types from leading brands including Amoena, ABC, Trulife, and Nearly Me.

6. Can I swim or exercise with a breast prosthesis?

Yes — specialized swim forms are made from materials that resist chlorine, saltwater, and moisture while retaining their shape. Post-mastectomy swimsuits and swimwear have built-in pockets to hold the form securely. For exercise, lightweight foam forms and sports mastectomy bras provide comfort and support during activity.

7. What sizes do mastectomy bras come in?

Our mastectomy bras range from size 32A through 54H, including full-figure and plus-size options. Many styles come in both standard and wide-band sizes. Because sizing varies by brand, we provide detailed size charts for each brand in our buying guide and on individual product pages.

8. How do I care for a silicone breast form?

Silicone breast forms should be cleaned after each use with mild soap and warm water, then air-dried. Store in the original case to maintain shape. Avoid contact with sharp objects, oil-based creams, and sunscreen. Most silicone forms are also machine washable in a mesh bag on a gentle cycle.

Frequently asked questions

A breast form is an external prosthesis which can be worn inside the bra pocket of a post mastectomy bra. It has the look and feel of a natural breast and is generally made of silicone, gel, foam or fiberfill. Breast forms come in a variety of shape, size and color. The amount of breast tissue removed during mastectomy determines the prosthesis best suited for the person.

Post mastectomy bras are similar to regular bras but with an important difference – there are spandex pockets inside the post mastectomy bra that holds a breast prosthesis securely in place.

After mastectomy, it takes around four to six weeks for essential healing to take place after which the first fitting for a silicone breast form may be held.
