Extended wear skin barriers are designed to provide greater protection from stoma output that is loose or liquid. People living with urostomy or ileostomy mainly use these skin barriers as they better handle aggressive liquid output and prevent skin irritation. The extended wear wafers do not break down like a regular wear barrier when they come in contact with loose or liquid drainage. These wafers can be worn for up to seven days without compromising peristomal skin integrity. For people who have liquid stools with colostomies, extended-wear wafers should also be considered. Extended wear skin barriers are often available on drainable ostomy pouching systems.
An extended wear skin barrier has stronger resistance to the liquidity of waste material and its leakage. The adhesive used in these skin barriers has a strong ability to attach to your skin and control the leakage. The pouch will not get loose with the use of an extended skin barrier. An ostomate can easily use them for up to 5-7 days. Some of the extended wear ostomy wafers contain substances that absorb the moisture from the stoma output causing the barrier
to swell up around the stoma, allowing for a better seal and resistance to the stool or urine under the flange. The wafer will move with the stoma and normal peristalsis and will not block the opening of the stoma.
Extended wear barriers are more durable, resistant to melt-out, and have greater adhesion and enduring tack. They have proven a longer wear time of up to seven days. So, these barriers are helpful for ostomates with liquid, corrosive, or high-volume output. People with ileostomies, urostomies, and those who sweat heavily more commonly use extended wear barriers, as it takes longer for the barrier to erode than a standard wear barrier. Furthermore, they can be worn for up to 7 days without compromising peristomal skin.
