What are Surgical Instruments?

Surgical Instruments are specially fashioned tools used by health care professionals to carry out specific actions during an operation. Some instruments are designed for general use, whereas others for particular procedures. Moreover, surgical instruments are available for almost all specialties of medicine. Subsequently, precision instruments are needed for ophthalmology, otology, and microsurgery.

Some surgical instruments are reusable, while other tools are single-use only. All the instruments used in operation are sterile, and therefore they must only be touched by those who are scrubbed. A huge assortment of instruments is found in an operating suite, including scalpels, scissors, forceps, retractors, and clamps which are used to perform functions such as cutting, dissecting, holding, grasping, retracting, or suturing. Surgical instruments are generally made of stainless steel. Other metals and alloys, including carbon steel, aluminum, titanium, and Vitallium, are also used. Surgical instruments can be classified into these four basic types:

Apart from these major categories, there are dilators/probes, suturing, and aspiration instruments. Health Products For You offers a wide variety of high-quality surgical instruments like scissors, forceps, clamps, scalpels, etc., forged from corrosion-resistant surgical stainless steel. They are designed to perform the functions of dissecting the membranes from the skin or suturing to hold the tissues after surgery.

How do you maintain Surgical Instruments?

  1. Surgical Instruments are needed to be cleaned during a procedure. The instruments are wiped with a moist sponge and frequently rinsed in sterile water.
  2. Frequent cleaning helps prevent blood or other tissue hardening and becoming trapped on the instrument.
  3. After the completion of the procedure, all the instruments used are thoroughly cleaned and sterilized. After manual cleaning, instruments are placed in an autoclave.
  4. Periodic inspection of the surgical instruments is important. They should always be checked before, during, and after a surgical procedure.
  5. Clamps, forceps, and scissors are examined to ensure that the tips are even and in proper alignment. The tips should not overlap. Hinged instruments should hold firmly and close properly.
  6. Faulty instruments, when used in a procedure, have the potential to injure patients. Likewise, scissors must be sharp and smooth and cut easily.
  7. Check the edges of sharp instruments for chips, nicks, or dents. Inspection of the surgical instruments is an ongoing process that must be carried out to ensure patient safety.
  8. Replace the faulty instruments promptly and resharpen the blunt ones.

What are the different types of surgical instruments?

Scissors

Scissors are the most important items of the surgical instrument set. They are usually made of high-grade medical stainless steel. Surgeons use them during an operation to cut tissues at the surface or inside the human body. The cutting blades can be curved, straight, blunt, or pointed. The function of the operation will determine the shape of the blade. For better wound healing, scissors should cut exactly at the point where the blades meet. One must prefer not to use blunt scissors. The range of surgical scissors includes iris scissors, delicate scissors, tenotomy scissors, dissecting scissors, mayo scissors, stitch scissors, operating scissors, and many other general use surgical scissors. Our top-selling product, Prestige Medical Bandage Scissor is used during various medical procedures.

Scalpel

Scalpels are small and extremely sharp cutting instruments used for skin incision. A scalpel consists of two parts, a blade and a handle. Scalpels may be single-use, disposable, or reusable. Today, disposable scalpels are most commonly used since they are more cost-effective and safer. Disposable scalpels are usually packed in individual sterile pouches. The disposable scalpels offer maximum safety, efficiency, and economy. The entire scalpel is discarded after use. Similarly, Dynarex Medicut Disposable Scalpel, with Autoclavable Plastic Handle, is a single-use scalpel. At the same time, reusable scalpels have to be sterilized and also sharpened regularly.

Forceps

Surgical forceps are the hand-held, hinged instrument used for grasping, compressing, and holding during surgery. They are usually made of high-grade carbon steel so that they can withstand repeated sterilization in high-temperature autoclaves. They are also made from stainless steel, chromium, and vanadium alloys. The tips of the alloy models have the added advantage of durability and high flexibility and offer superior performance. Single-use disposable forceps are made from plastic. Surgical forceps are broadly divided into non-locking and locking forceps.

Non-Locking Forceps

Non-locking forceps are also known as tweezer-style forceps, thumb forceps, tissue forceps, or dressing forceps. Closure activates by compression between the thumb and forefinger and is used for grasping, holding, or manipulating body tissue. Forceps are used to hold or move tissue during surgery or to move dressings. Thumb forceps helps to keep the tissue in place while applying sutures and gently move tissues out of the way during exploratory surgery.

Thumb forceps come with a variety of tips including, flat, serrated, cupped, ringed, grooved, teeth or diamond dusted. The tips may also be curved, straight, or angled. Serrated forceps are designed for use with tissues since they require less pressure to maintain a firm grip. Additionally, flat forceps are used to remove sutures, dressing, or other drapes. HPFY’s Graham-Field Addison Thumb Dressing Forceps is an example of serrated forceps.

Locking Forceps

Locking forceps are hinged forceps that look more like scissors. They are also known as ring forceps, hemostats, or clamps. They are called clamps as they are used to hold tissues securely. Locking forceps are called hemostats when they are used to control blood flow during surgery.

Hemostats come in different sizes with locking handles to deal with fine bleeding arteries and veins. Locking forceps are called needle holders when they are used to grasp and manipulate needles. They help hold a suture needle and guide it through tissue when installing stitches or closing a surgical incision. Graham-Field Kelly Hemostatic Forcep is made of stainless steel and used to handle the arteries and veins.
