Tilt Tables support a patient from a horizontal plane (flat bed-like position). They consist of a flat platform on which the patient lies down, which can be tilted at various angles, ranging from horizontal (0 degrees) to vertical (90 degrees) or any position in between. From the horizontal position, a manual crank or electric motor is activated to slowly initiate the process of transitioning the table from a horizontal plane toward an increasingly vertical standing position. At the same time, the patient is properly secured to the table with safety positioning straps. The tilt table relies upon the use of gravity to do its work. When standing occurs, even from within a partial vertical plane position, our muscles are elongated, and physiological respiration and endurance can be improved.
Tilt table tests are commonly performed to diagnose and evaluate conditions such as orthostatic hypotension, neurally mediated syncope (fainting), vasovagal syncope, and autonomic nervous system dysfunction. These tests help healthcare professionals assess how the patient's body responds to changes in position and identify the underlying causes of symptoms like dizziness, lightheadedness, fainting, or unexplained loss of consciousness.
