Types of Specimen Collection Devices

• Specimen Kit: Specimen kits usually include a pair of gloves, swab sticks, lubricant packet and a label. They provide a closed system that reduces the risk of specimen contamination and related false readings. These kits are usually sterile and latex-free.
• Specimen Container: Specimen containers are sterile, translucent containers that store specimens. They usually have labels to write the patient name, doctor name, date and room number.
• Specimen Traps: Specimen traps are sterile, clear plastic vials with clearly marked gradations in 1cc increments. They usually include an ID label and a latex-free tubing that accommodates all suction catheters to become a universal trap.

• Labels: Mention the patient name and identification on labels. Ensure that the information on the label and the requisition match.
• Volume: There should be sufficient volume to fill the container and perform the tests. Underfilling or overfilling the containers with preservatives can have an effect o the specimen-to-additive ratios.
• Collection Date and Time: Collection time and date are recommended to be added on the specimen label. This will ensure that the collection was done correctly.
• Collection Method: Check the collection method when the specimen is received in the laboratory to confirm that the type of specimen submitted meets the requirements of the test ordered.
• Proper Preservation: Specimen should not contain any chemical preservative and not be refrigerated for greater than two hours post collection. Ensure that the method of preservation used is appropriate for the selected test. If the preservative used is not correct, then the test cannot be conducted.
• Light Protection: Specimen that is to be tested for light-sensitive analytes should be collected in a container that protects it from light.
