Hand weakness is a symptom that is common with a number of conditions. Strength of hand differs in all individuals, since your hand is a complex system of nerves, muscles, joints, bones and tendons. Any injury or damage to any of these may lead to muscle weakness. A muscular person will have a better grip than a lean person. Factors such as age, gender, physical fitness, muscularity and size affect the grip strength of hands. A dynamometer is used to evaluate the hand strength of a person. For an average man the hand strength should be between 105-112 lbs. while for an average woman it should be around 57-65 lbs. a little difference in values is acceptable but abnormally low hand strength is a matter of concern. Short term weakness can be due to a medication or a sedative. Such weakness wears off as the effect of the sedative goes away. Chronic hand weakness can be a result of chronic conditions such as arthritis, bursitis, etc.
Treating hand weakness usually includes two steps, improving the strength of the hand and aiding a weak hand to execute daily functions.
A number of adaptive aids can be used to help overcome the difficulty of executing actions which arises due to weak hands.
