The Thumb Spica Splint consists of a D-ring strap to hold the thumb securely in its place. The Rolyan Splint is considered ideal for arthritis, skiers thumb, and gamekeeper's thumb.

How to use Rolyan Thumb Spica Splint?


  1. Heat splint blank in water and heat it to approximately 160°F (70°C) until pliable.
  2. Remove from heat pan and place the splint on a towel on a flat surface. Blot excess water from the splint

Care and Cleaning Methods for Rolyan Hand Splint:


  • The splint should be kept away from heat sources like ovens, sunny car windows, hot water and open flames. The splint loses its shape in temperatures over 135°F (57°C). 
  • The splint should be cleaned with soap and lukewarm water. The straps must be washed with soap and water, but the adhesive portion should not be moistened. Before reapplying the splint make sure that the splint should be dried thoroughly.


Contraindications:

  • Not recommended in the presence of severe edema.
  • Must not be used directly over open wounds and infected areas.
  • May not be recommended for the acute phase of most thumb fractures.


Precautions:

  • This splint must be fitted by a healthcare professional who is familiar with the purpose for which it is prescribed. The healthcare professional is responsible for providing wearing instructions and precautions to other healthcare practitioners, care providers involved in the patient’s care, and the patient.
  • If you experience any unusual swelling, skin discoloration or discomfort, use should be discontinued and you must consult a healthcare professional.
  • Be careful that the straps are not so tight that they interfere with circulation.
  • After heating splinting material, always check its temperature before applying it to the patient.
