What to buy with Ossur AFO Light Ankle Foot Orthosis

How to Insert Ossur AFO Light Orthosis Into Shoe?

  • If present, remove the insole from the shoe.
  • Place the AFO inside the shoe.
  • If necessary adjust the shape of the footplate (by grinding) to the contours of the shoe-sole (Use the insole as a reference for shaping).
Note: Do not grind the strut at the heel area as this may jeopardize product performance and strength.
  • As applicable, re-insert the insole on top of the AFO-footplate.

How to Fit Ossur AFO Light?

  • Apply the J-shape spring to the patients’ lower leg.
  • Apply the calf piece.
  • Verify height of the calf piece.
  • To reduce the length of the posterior strut, remove calf piece and grind strut to an appropriate level (approximately at the thickest part of the calf).
    - Note: Do not grind the strut at the heel area as this may jeopardize product performance and strength.

Customizing The AFO

  • In case of point pressure at the heel-bone, it is advised to apply padding under the existing padding just proximal of the pressure point (Distal calf). Remove the padding and glue additional padding to the strut before re-attaching the padding.
  • For patients with lower activity levels, where the calf piece doesn’t move, it is advised to permanently fixate the calf-piece by application of strong glue (Loctite 495.) into the calf-piece before attaching it to the strut. The calf piece can also be riveted to the posterior strut. The elastic band and the micro-hook and loop may be removed in this case.
