Molnlycke Mepilex Border Sacrum Self-Adherent Soft Silicone Bordered Foam Dressing with Safetac

Molnlycke Mepilex Border Sacrum Self-Adherent Soft Silicone Bordered Foam Dressing with Safetac is all-in-one foam dressing for pressure ulcers and other chronic and acute wounds of the sacral area. It minimizes patient pain and trauma to the wound and surrounding skin. Mepilex Border Sacrum absorbs and retains exudate effectively and maintains a moist wound environment. Mepilex Border Sacrum ensures that the dressing can be changed without causing any damage to the wound or surrounding skin or exposing the patient to additional pain. Safetac layer seals the wound edges which prevent the exudate from leaking onto the surrounding skin, minimizing the risk for maceration.

Mepilex Border Sacrum

Design Features:

Molnlycke Mepilex Border Sacrum has three main design features: to fit the anatomy of the sacral area; to prevent pressure ulcers and to create an optimal healing environment for moderate to highly exuding pressure ulcers or other wounds in the sacral area such as surgical excision of pilonidal cysts.

How Mepilex Border Sacrum Works?

Mepilex Border Sacrum has excellent fluid handling properties because of the following:
  • Safetac layer - resides closest to the skin and prevents horizontal leakage
  • Absorption layer - ensures quick and effective absorption
  • Spreading layer - helps spread the exudate into the retention layer
  • Retention layer - prevents exudate from being pushed back into the skin thereby reducing the risk of maceration
  • Backing film - waterproof, highly breathable and bacteria proof to protect the wound from outer contamination
Absorption, Spreading and Retention layers help in maintaining an optimal moisture level and reducing the risk of breakdowns. They are critical in dissipating shear and redistributing pressure. For pressure ulcer prevention, the elasticity of Safetac layer help dissipate shear forces and allows for repositioning the Foam Dressing after skin assessment.

Use Mepilex Border Sacrum:

  • To prevent pressure ulcers
  • To treat medium to highly exuding sacral wounds like pressure ulcers or surgical excision of pilonidal cysts
  • For a combination of excellent fluid handling capacity and retention, which provides effective exudate management with less risk of maceration
  • To lower costs with quicker healing and less pain for patients

Benefits Of Mepilex Border Sacrum:

  • Self-adherent, no secondary fixation needed
  • Atraumatic to the wound and surrounding skin on removal
  • Does not adhere to moist wound bed but adheres gently to dry tissue
  • Maintains a moist wound environment
  • Minimizes the risk of maceration
  • Designed for ease of use and patient comfort
  • Low potential for skin irritation and allergy
  • Can be lifted and adjusted without losing its adherent properties
  • Can remain in place for up to 7 days depending on the condition of the wound
  • Can be used under compression bandages
  • Made for the sacrum – soft and conformable

Safetac Technology:

Safetac, pioneered by Molnlycke Health Care, delivers above and beyond the ordinary. Proven to help optimize the wound healing journey and even prevent wounds, dressings with Safetac are the safe choice for patients and a champion for higher standards in wound care. In fact, we have a wealth of evidence that supports the clinical and economic benefits of dressings with Safetac, including Mepilex. To date, these dressings have helped millions of patients worldwide.
It is specifically shaped to fit the sacral area. Using dressings with Safetac drastically reduces pain and tissue damage during dressing changes. A dressing containing a Safetac interface does not stick to the moist wound; it seals the edge of the ulcer preventing maceration, and does not strip skin, all while maintaining an optimal wound microclimate. This means less pain, less stressful dressing changes, and potentially a faster healing process.

How To Use Mepilex Border Sacrum?

  • First position the patient lying in a side position and prepare the skin of the patient by cleansing with a pH balance soap, chlorhexidine baby wipe or warm water
  • Removal of any previously applied barrier ointment is essential
  • Further care should be taken not to use dimethicone barrier wipes in the area where the dressing will be applied as this will decrease adherence to the skin
  • Once the surface is clean and dry, remove only the center release film of the Mepilex Border Sacrum and fold the dressing in half
  • Next, apply the central aspect of the adhesive side of the dressing so that it begins at the proximal margin of the sacrum and terminates within the gluteal fold
  • Taking time to smooth the central aspect of the dressing to the skin first and holding in place for 10 to 15 seconds will ensure that a good seal is achieved between the dressing and the skin
  • Finally, remove the remaining release film from each side of the dressing and smooth the dressing evenly onto the bilateral buttocks one side at a time
  • The Safetac technology of this dressing allows it to be peeled back without traumatizing the skin for proper skin assessment
  • To minimize rolling of the product edges, keep the dressing taut and employ a top-to-bottom pole or a diagonal down approach
  • Finally, hold the dressing taut as you smooth it back onto the skin
  • A good rule of thumb is to contemplate a policy that advocates for the dressing to be changed every three days to ensure visualization of skin under the dressing
  • Providing changes every three days also decreases the potential for rolling of the dressing edges with the frequent peel-back technique
  • Additionally, some clinicians report success painting the dressing borders with skin prep after it is applied to the skin to seal the edges against soiling from urine or stool

A Part Of Pressure Ulcer Prevention:

Clinical trials proved that Mepilex Border Sacrum prevents pressure ulcers. The dressing is applied prophylactically in emergency rooms, intensive care or before long surgical interventions. When compared with no dressing and competitor products, Mepilex Border Sacrum has been demonstrated to impact four extrinsic factors that can contribute to developing pressure ulcers; these being to redistribute shear, redistribute pressure, reduce friction, and to maintain an optimal microclimate. When adding this treatment to pressure ulcer prevention protocols and strategies, pressure ulcers can be prevented. However, the use of dressings as part of a prophylactic therapy does not preclude the need to continue to develop and follow a comprehensive pressure ulcer prevention protocol.

  • In case of signs of clinical infection, consult a health care professional for adequate infection treatment
  • Do not use Mepilex Border together with oxidizing agents such as hypochlorite solutions or hydrogen peroxide
  • Mepilex Border should be stored in dry conditions below 35°C (95F) and be protected from direct sunlight
  • Do not use if inner package is damaged
  • Sterility is guaranteed if inner package is intact
  • Do not resterilize

question image
What is the frequency of change?
Lexi - 2/21/2017 4:18:07 AM
answer image
Mepilex Border Sacrum may be left in place for up to 7 days depending on the condition of the wound and the surrounding skin, or as indicated by accepted clinical practice. Mepilex Border should be changed when exudate is present at the pad edges.
Note: A change in dressing regimen can result in an initial increased level of exudate which temporarily may require an increased change frequency.
