How does Iceman Ice Machine work?

How does Iceman Ice Machine work?
ICEMAN with dual pump recirculation technology. The DonJoy IceMan features a patented recirculation system that allows water warmed after flowing through the cold pad to be preserved and remixed with cooler ice water at a constant flow rate, providing consistent cool water distribution throughout the cold pad.

How does Iceman Ice Machine work?
Competitors Other versions restrict or pinch water flow to the cold pad, causing variable flow rates and inconsistent cold pad temperatures.

How to use Donjoy IceMan Cold Therapy Unit?

Chronic or Injury Application

  1. Add ice to the level indicated inside the unit, and then add 2 quarts or 2 liters of water.
  2. Apply the site-specific pad to the area to be treated. The pad should be applied over a thin layer of gauze or stockinette. Do not apply the cooling pad directly to the skin.
  3. Connect the cooling pad to the hose extending from the cooler, making sure the connectors snap into place tightly together (listen for an audible click).
  4. Plug the power supply into the wall.
  5. Connect the power supply cord provided with the unit to the connector located on the front of the cooler. This will immediately start the motorized pump.
Warning: Use only the power supply that came with this unit. Failure to do this could damage the pump, the power supply, or both.
  6. Adjust the temperature control on the hand console starting at the blue dot (allow 10 minutes for the temperature to stabilize) and adjust to the temperature prescribed by the physician (indicated by the thermometer).
  7. When the ice has melted, refill it with ice and water. (Make sure the device is unplugged during the refilling procedure.)

Post Surgery Application

  1. Add ice to the level indicated inside the unit, and then add 2 quarts or 2 liters of water.
  2. Apply the site-specific pad over the incisional area. A thin layer of dressing should be between the pad and the skin.
  3. Place a layer of cast padding, 1/2” to 1”, over the cooling pad. Utilize an elastic wrap under medium tension to wrap the cooling pad until the pad and padding are covered. Make sure the ends of the hose extend out from under the wrap.
  4. Connect the cooling pad to the hose extending from the cooler, making sure the connectors snap into place tightly together.
  5. Plug the power supply into the wall.
  6. Connect the power supply cord provided with the unit to the connector located on the front of the cooler. This will immediately start the motorized pump.
  7. WARNING: Use only the power supply that came with this unit. DonJoy P/N 13-4882-0-00000. Failure to do so could damage the pump, the power supply, or both.

Precautions

  • A routine check of the temperature must be made to ensure that appropriate treatment is being given.
  • Special care should be used with prolonged cold therapy sessions. This includes frequently checking skin conditions and the temperature reading on the hand control.
  • Use of this device below a 40°F (4°C) temperature reading is not recommended.
  • Patients vary in sensitivity to cold. Routinely monitor patient and temperature readings to ensure appropriate individualized treatment guidelines are met.
  • It is important to observe the patient’s skin condition during use. If redness or a change in skin sensitivity develops, discontinue the use of this product immediately and contact your physician.
  • Be aware of any nerve irritation and/or muscular reaction associated with that skin sensitivity and irritation. Discontinue therapy until the cause is determined.
  • The prescribing medical professional must ensure that the patient understands how to conduct such monitoring if the patient is using the unit outside of the prescribing medical professional's presence, at the advice of that medical professional.
  • To reduce the risk of electrical shock, do not disassemble the unit; refer servicing to qualified personnel.

Frequently Asked Questions

  1. Other than standard ice cubes, what can I use to cool the water in my IceMan Clear3 Unit?

Acceptable methods of cooling the water include putting water in Red Solo Cups or Tupperware and freezing them to make larger ice blocks, which can be removed and dumped into the unit.

  2. Can I freeze water bottles and place them into the IceMan Clear3 Ice Machine unit?

No, this is not recommended for a couple of reasons.

    • First, the plastic from the bottle creates a barrier between the ice and the water in the unit, which can prevent the water from reaching optimal therapeutic temperature.
    • Secondly, paper and/or glue from the water bottle label can break down into the water in the unit, creating issues if it travels into the hose/pad.
  3. The pad doesn’t seem to feel very cold. How do I know the water is cold enough?

    • Any temperature below 55°F is in the therapeutic range for cold therapy. Our semi-closed loop system utilizes a mixing chamber and has a flow rate that delivers the water into the pad within the optimal treatment range 38°F – 42°F.
    • Double-check to make sure you have appropriately filled the unit with enough ice to cool the water.
