Method 1: Sewing or vinyl measuring tape

  • Secure the end of the tape measurer under the thumb.
  • Keeping the palm flat, wrap around the palm, making sure to wrap over the top of the knuckles.
  • Note the measurement and consult chart located in the images.

Method 2: Paper, ruler, pen, scissors, and tape

  • Cut a strip from a piece of paper approximately a 1/2 wide.
  • Tape one end and secure to skin across knuckles.
  • Keeping palm flat, wrap around the palm and across knuckles.

  • Remove and measure the length of the paper to the pen mark.

How to use Comfort Cool Thumb CMC Restriction Splint?

  1. Slide the thumb into the Comfort Cool thumb wrap. Wrap the splint around the wrist and secure the hook and loop fastener comfortably on the dorsum (top) of the hand.
  2. Pull the CMC strap firmly from the base of the thumb, attaching it to the curved hook fastener on the thenar (palm) eminence.
  3. Gently pull the strap through the thumb web space and secure it to the hook fastener on the dorsum (top) of the splint. Trim the strap if needed.
  4. To allow greater IP motion, cut a curve along the volar thumb edge. If the thumb MP joint support is not desired, cut off the thumb sleeve below the thumb web seam. Be sure to trim just above one of the stitched reinforcements. Trim next to the distal edge of the curved hook fastener on the thenar no closer than 1/4" (6.4mm).

FAQs

1. How does a thumb spica splint work?

Thumb spica splints are orthopedic splints that are used to limit movement and provide support and comfort to people who have a thumb injury. The other fingers are usually free to move in this type of splint.

2. How tight should my Cool Comfort Thumb Brace be?

When you put it on, the long side of the brace should rest outside your thumb and along the inside of your wrist and forearm. Secure the straps around your thumb and wrist so that the brace is comfortable to wear and does not obstruct your circulation. Your cast was designed to prevent excessive movement and should, therefore, be snug but not too tight. If the splint is bothering you, see your doctor.

3. What is a CMC Thumb Splint used for?

The main purposes of using a CMC joint brace are to stabilize the joint, reduce pain symptoms, and treat osteoarthritis problems. It helps enhance the performance of everyday activities.

4. How long should one wear a thumb splint?

It is often recommended that a splint be worn for most of the day for 3 to 4 weeks. During this time, you may need to remove the splint several times a day.

5. Is it ideal to wear a thumb splint at night?

Wearing the CMC Splint all night will make your joints stiff. Don't wear your working splint overnight unless you've been told to by your therapist or nurse.
