Frequently Asked Questions

  1. How often do you change a Shiley cannula?

It should not be used for more than 29 days.

  2. Do you remove the inner cannula before suctioning?

No. The inner cannula stays in place during suctioning so that the outer cannula does not collect secretions.

  3. How often should the inner cannula be cleaned?

The inner cannula tube should be cleaned 2 to 3 times per day or more as needed.

  4. Why can't you clean a disposable cannula?

Disposable Cannulas are meant to be used only once, so cleaning is not necessary.
