  • The splint can be modified for a better fit.
  • The splint should cover two-thirds of the length of the forearm.
  • The splint should clear bony prominences, and it should not impinge the thumb web space
  • The proximal edge of the splint can be flared for increased comfort

  • To trim or modify these splints, which are made from 1/8" (3.2mm) Polyformsplinting material, spot-heat the splint with a heat gun or in a heat pan of water at a temperature of 150° to 160°F (65° to 70°C) for one minute or until pliable.
  • Heating the entire splint may cause it to lose its preformed shape.
  • Polyform has a high degree of drapefor better results when modifying the material, shape it with stroking movements.
  • Note: Be careful not to heat the splint near the strapping or the plastic base for the slot-and-loop strapping.

  • Put the splint into position by sliding the fingers under the elastic strapping.
  • If necessary, adjust the slot-and-loop strapping for proper fitfeed it through the slotted plastic base on the underside of the splint to increase or decrease the amount of strapping needed to secure each finger
  • Attach the two hook tabs to the ulnar and radial borders of the hand portion of the splint.
  • Attach the elastic strap to the hook tabs
  • Attach forearm and thumb straps.
  • If desired, trim strap length.
  • An additional strap may be placed across the wrist for increased support.

Care And Cleaning:

  • The splint will lose its shape in temperatures over 135°F (57°C) - It should be kept away from sources of heat such as ovens, hot water, open flames, and sunny car windows
  • The splint may be cleaned with soap and lukewarm water.
  • The straps may be washed with soap and water, but the adhesive portion should not be moistened.
  • The splint and straps should be allowed to dry thoroughly before reapplication of the splint.

  • Not for the acute phase of most wrist or hand fractures.
  • Not for use directly over open wounds and infected areas.

  • These splints are to be fitted initially by a healthcare professional who is familiar with the purpose for which they are prescribed.
  • The healthcare professional is responsible for providing wearing instructions and precautions to other healthcare practitioners, care providers involved in the patients care, and the patient.
  • If unusual swelling, skin discoloration or discomfort occurs, use should be discontinued and a healthcare professional consulted.
  • Be careful that the straps are not so tight that they interfere with circulation.
  • After heating thesplinting material, always check its temperature before applying it to the patient.
