How long should a catheter stay in? And do they need to be changed and if so how often

It seems air bubbles or suction is preventing the catheter from draining into the bag properly.  If I manipulate the tubing, we can get it to drain.  Is there some type of valve that needs to be released?  We didn't get any instructions for use and the nurse didn't seem very comfortable with the device before we left the hospital
