Halyard Tracheostomy Heat and Moisture Exchanger is used with tracheostomy tubing to avoid drying out of the airway by reducing the risk of heat and moisture leaking from the patient's airway. The HME is made in a barrel shape, which helps retains heat and humidity within the airway that may have lessened. It is a lightweight connector that is latex-free and for single-patient use only. The Halyard HME can be used in respiratory and anesthesia procedures.

Applying a Heat Moisture Exchanger (HME) to the trach tube can keep secretions thin during the day. A humidifying filter known as an HME, which can be found in a variety of sizes and forms, attaches to the end of the trach tube (all styles fit over the standard trach tube opening).
HMEs should not be routinely replaced more frequently than every 48 hours, but they should be changed if they mechanically malfunction or become visibly soiled while being used on a patient.
