Frequently Asked Questions
Yankauer is an oral suctioning device with a rigid plastic suction tip and a large opening surrounded by a bulbous head. This tool is used during a medical procedure and carries out suctioning without causing any harm to the tissues around.
Yankauer suctioning is needed by patients who can cough but cannot swallow or bring out secretions. The tool pulls out oropharyngeal secretions preventing aspiration and clears the airway, abdomen or surgical sites of fluid and debris.
Yankauer suction should be used before the patient goes to sleep and as soon as he/she wakes up. Also to be used before eating or before going outdoors. Suctioning will be required if there is the sound of mucus rattling in the tube or airway and an increase in breathing.
