Orthopedic walking boots are also known as controlled ankle motion walking boot or CAM boots that are prescribed for stabilizing severe sprains or strains, fractures, tendon or ligament tears in the ankle or foot. These boots are used to limit ankle motion.

A walking boot comprises of

  • An inner soft fabric lining with hook and loop fasteners to enclose and cushion the foot and ankle 
  • A rigid frame designed to restrict motion in the lower leg
  • A hard plastic shell to provide rigidity and protection to the foot and ankle
  • Adjustable closure system to allow proper fitting to various leg sizes

CAM boots differ in height ranging from mid-calf to nearly knee-length, depending on the injury they are intended to treat. Some walker boots contain inflatable compartments which can be adjusted by the patient for increased support and comfort.

  • Cam walkers are adjustable and reusable.
  • They are fully removable and allow the patient to bathe the foot and ankle and remove the splint at night, if they desire. One must only remove a CAM boot if they are permitted to do so by the medical team. 
  • CAM walkers requires no special modifications for the patient to bear weight and walk.

Walker Boots cannot be used for more intense injuries. They are removable which can present a problem if not worn according to was is prescribed.
