How to apply a wound closure strip?

According to Healthline's article on the same subject, your doctor or nurse is most likely to apply a sterile strip on your cut. However, if you are doing it yourself, here is how you can use it -

  • Wash your hands with lukewarm water and unscented soap.
  • Cleanse the wound properly to remove any bacteria or debris.
  • Pat the area dry.
  • With your fingers, gently push both sides of the wound together. If it hurts too much, stop pushing and try again a few minutes later.
  • Put both halves of the Steri-Strip over the two sides of the cut to let it hold the wound properly.
  • Pull one side and then the other over the wound to close it.
  • Don’t apply both halves in the same direction as the cut.
  • Remember, each Steri-Strip should be about 1/8 inch from the other one.
  • Use another bandage on each side of the wound to keep the strips in place.
