A Brief Guide to Bath Safety Rails

A Brief Guide to Bath Safety Rails
Taikhum Sadiq

Bathroom safety refers to maintaining a safe environment for people with impaired mobility and motor functions and for the elderly who have a difficult time moving around in the bathroom.

What are bath safety rails?

Bathroom safety rails are individual or sets of safety rails that are installed in the bathroom to provide support for patients to move around in the bathroom. They are commonly installed around bathtubs and near commodes & shower areas.

Safety rails should not be confused with handrails that are installed near staircases and walkways. These safety rails are specifically designed to maintain a person’s stability while moving around the slippery surfaces of bathrooms.

Bathroom safety rails serve the same function as grab bars, but the basic difference being they can be installed in series to support continuous walking or moving around in the bathroom.

Types of toilet safety rails

Toilet safety rails are used for the shower and bathtub and are attached to bathroom walls. When buying one, it is essential to remember the requirement, such as the weight of the individual who will be using it and where. Shower bars are made of different materials and have varying quality grip.

Types of toilet grab bars include wall grab bars, tub grab bars, knurled grab bars, shower suction grab handles, curved grab bars, and security poles.

  • Wall Grab Bar: These assist during a bath or when using a commode. They are made of high-quality, heavy-duty steel tubing and offer safety and stability.
  • Tub Grab Bar:  Fixed to the sides of the bathtub, tub grab bars help the person to pull themselves in and out of the tub. These shower safety bars have a locking device to keep them securely attached to the bathtub. Some have multiple grip areas on the handle to provide a non-slip comfort grip to make bathing safer and more comfortable.
  • Knurled Grab Bar: These have a knurled finish, providing a firm grasping surface even when wet. These are sturdy stainless steel, rust-proof construction, and include horizontal or vertical mounting, grab bar, and pivoting/locking bar flexibility.
  • Suction Cup Grab Bar: These safety rails have two suction cups that adhere to smooth, non-porous surfaces. Moreover, the handles do not require installation tools to affix them without the need to drill holes in the wall.
  • Curved Grab Bar: These provide multiple gripping options at different heights for the user. Standing and sitting are made easy. They are made of rust-resistant zinc-plated steel and are an excellent option for all bathroom safety needs.
  • Security Poles: These provide flexible gripping options from the floor to the ceiling. So standing, sitting, climbing stairs, or transferring is made easy with this heavy-duty, durable steel grip bar.

Precautions to take while using toilet support rail

  • Inspect the area where the safety rails are used to see if the wall is strong enough to support the weight of the person using the grab rail.
  • For system safety rails, check whether each piece of the rail is fitted properly before use.
  • Never attach any external part to a different grab rail as they might not fit, and forcing them might reduce the strength or damage the rail.
  • Never use the safety rails as hangers for clothes, as they might reduce the grip of the rail.

Choosing the right bathroom grab rail helps to ensure a safe and accident-free environment in the bathroom.
